Just wondering if anyone has ever tried using one?  Also, is a reamer preferred over a 1 1/8" drill bit?

I assume you're wanting to enlarge the buffer tube hole on a 80% lower.  Reamers aren't really intended to remove large amounts of material.  You could use it to do the job if you only removed a small amount for each adjustment.  For each adjustment wipe a small amount of Tap-Magic alum cutting oil on the blades.  Ideally, you'd drill the hole slightly under size then ream the last .010 or so.  Naturally, the hole gets tapped anyway, so a fine finish isn't required.

If you have the lower chucked in a lathe or clamped on a mill table, the drill bit will be OK. Hand holding might allow it to 'walk' enough to screw up the job. The reamer will be much slower, but you should be able to make a pilot which will allow it to cut true, without the tendancy to 'grab' as a drill bit does.
