I was killing time in the shop one afternoon, when in a moment of what I'll call inspiration, I decided to make a block to hold an upper receiver for barrelling.  I took two chunks of wood, hollowed them out with a router, packed them with short-strand fibreglass, then clamped them around a prepped AR-15A2 upper.  After a few hours, I popped them apart, and voila, a brand new set of upper receiver blocks.

I haven't tried them out, but hope to soon.  My question is, when one buys the Peace River Action Block from Brownell's it comes with an insert that sits inside the boltway during barrelling.  Anybody know what this is supposed to accomplish?  I notice that the new Bushmaster action block has no such insert, so I am not especially worried that my setup is going to wreck my upper, but I am curious.  Who has thoughts?

That insert prevents you from crushing your upper when tightening it in the vise, it kind of holds the "inside" walls. I have seen pictures of people who did not bother to use it and then lived to regret it.

I posted this on the other thread about the Brownells holder. Now I have used both and the one from Bushmaster came without the insert. I have not crushed a upper yet.
