Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get the barrel nut off without having a barrel nut wrench?

If you don't care about the condition of the barrel nut when you're done, use a pipe wrench or BIG channel-locks.

Before you do that see if you can cut a hole in a 2X4 the same diameter as the nut. Cut the 2X4 in half through the hole. Lock it up in a vice and turn the upper with your hands.
I take it you don't have an upper receiver block either.

You might be right. Don't damage a perfectly good firearm by using the wrong tools. GI barrel wrenches are cheap. Go buy one before you undertake the removal of your barrel.

...I wouldn't try it without an upper receiver block - might tweak your upper Dude...

Getting the barrel nut off without a proper wrench doesn't seem to be a problem. I just wouldn't recommend putting a new on with a pipe wrench or piece of 2x4. [:)]

I called a buddy of mine and he has a wrench for the barrel nut. I think that may be the way to go. Thanks for all your input guys.
