Hi all,

I'm prepared to install a new M4 barrel on a new A4 receiver for the very first time.
Actually I have a military combination wrench and will receive a receiver block later.
Hate to purchase a torque wrench 'coz it's too expensive for mounting one single barrel.
What would happen if I mount the barrel without the torque wrench?

I've installed quite a few barrels without a tourqe wrench until I broke down and bought one.

30 foot pounds of tourqe is minimum and thats not really all that much. Consider the tourqe on a chevy small block v-8 head bolt is 90lbs.

If you lean into pretty good then check your tube alignment you will be ok.  Just retighten if you need to get proper tube alignment.

Thanks 4 the reply 6mmAR,
When you said tube alignement, do you mean the gas tube?

By the way, if I don't have a torque wrench and overtorqued the barrel nut, does it hurt the rifle in some way?

Your buying a receiver block to mount your barrel, but you don't want to buy a torque wrench because it's too expensive[?] I think you have things in reverse.

You can get a torque wrench for under $20 from many auto supply stores.

Torque until just snug and then advance to align the gas tube.

HarborFreight.com has one on sale for $9.95 right now, with free shipping. Try to beat that.

Thank you for the numerous replies.
One last question, I have to buy a vise, what size of vise do I need and does it have to be installed on a heavy table or a folding table will be enough?

Thanks in advance,
LRRPS.

Go with an American made 6" vise and mount it on a very stable heavy work bench. You'll be glad you did! Trust me on this.

You can 'get by' with less but it's not worth it.
