There are so many choices it can be overwhelming to a newbie. The CAR's and M-4's are cool looking, but the Expedition probably offers better range performance. Uses include punching paper, action rifle, truck box duty, varmit shooting (less then 200yards). I'm thinking the CAR rather then M-4 to save $$$, going with a flattop and buying a RRA tactical mount. If I've got it right, I need the elevation of the raised mount to get a scope's line of sight over the front sight. I plan to stick with iron sights but, want the option of possibly using a low power, compact variable. I can't see going with a hi-power scope on a 556 unless you have a long barrel varmiter style. Thanks, tjg |

I like my 20" A2 expedition. It's full size, so if you want something smaller, there is no real loss of accuracy to the 16". You can also mount a scope onto the carry handle (I just use the iron sights myself. If I went for long range varminting I would use a scope and a 24" free floating barrel) the only thing I can tell you for sure is that you will not be disappointed in any choice you make with J&T. You must consider your intended use. If you need compact, carry ability and maneuverability, go with the 16". If you want general use and are not worried about having it 6" shorter (4" barrel and 2" stock) go with the 20 full stock. If you want a serious long range varmint gun, get the 24" free floating varmint with full stock and flat top and put a good high power variable scope with windage/range markings on reticle. But basically for general range use either the 16 or 20 will do you well. This is just my opinion. The main reason I went with the 20"A2 expedition is that it is the closest I could get to an M16 in a post ban rifle. And it has the nice HBAR Chromolly barrel. As to accuracy, it is sweeeeeet [rail] Above statements are my opinion and some may disagree. Primarily, it is personal taste. The same reason you are building an AR instead of just buying a mini 14. Good luck with your decision and have fun... |
