I'm sure this has been discussed before, but here goes.  I want to remove the front sight from my DPMS rifle and replace it with a 4-rail as block.  The guy that sold me the gas said that the pins for the front sight had to be removed from right to left.  Is this true?  Are the pins tapered or something?  Also, when placing the gas block onto the barrel, he advised me to drill small holes for the set screws into the barrel.  Obviously not deep holes, just enough to keep the block from rotating.  I really don't want to do that if it isn't necessary.  Advice?  Thanks.

You were given sound advice though I would not regard it as drilling a small hole rather a small indentation on the barrel.  This is best done with a cordless drill where you have better control of the speed because you want to do it slowly.  If the gas block has four set screws, you can probably get away without doing this because you can torque them enough that they will dig into the barrel.  If it only has two, then you would be better off following his advice.  Your biggest challenge will be aligning it properly.  Perhaps it is best that you have it done professionally.

Thanks for the advice. I'm having a gunsmith install the free float tube so I'll just have him do the gas block at the same time.  It's my first AR and I don't make enough to screw it up.[BD]

Yes, the pins are tapered and will only come out one way... but I believe that way is left to right as sighting down the barrel from a normal shooting position. Just look at the two sides, one side is obviously larger.

I removed the front sight from my HB a while back--no problem.  I just tried to do the same on a surplus A-1 barrel & it is stuck!  The pins were so tight I ended up cutting the sight off.  What gives?

Anyone know who sells a low-profile gas block for a .625" barrel?

Usually when the pins do not budge, I use a starter punch and then drill them out.

This question was asked by seahunt a while back and there was no luck in finding anybody that makes one.  If you want the option of a flipup sight, PRI made a version of their flipup sight for a .625" barrel.  It is available from Mounting Solutions Plus.
