I've seen references to making hi cap mags for 7.62x39 ARs by spot welding the top of an AR mag onto the body of an AK mag.  Is this legal?  If both "donor" mags were pre-ban hi caps I would think it would be ok but the ATF has a funny sense of humor.  Anybody know the legal status of doing this?

It is only legal if the magazine funcutions as originaly intended in the gun it was intended for.  You can do any mod you want as long as it will still function in the original gun.  As soon as it fails to function due to a mod you have illegally manufactured a High Capacity Ammunition Feeding Dievce.  I will see if I can find the letter from the BATF and post it.

If this was legal, you would not see the USA Frankenmags going for $50-$75 each.
