I'm planning on building a post ban M4 type rifle. I have built a FAL from parts before (headspaced and timed barrel) so I have some knowlege on how to break something. First question is which lower to buy? All the info on the board is kind of overwhelming. I would like to keep the lower cost to around $120. Second question...If I buy a M4 kit (say from Model 1 Sales) would I have to change the flash suppressor to a brake and grind off the bayonet lug? This is generally what must be done to a FAL to stay compliant to ATF regs. Just want to verify that I have a good plan before I spend a bunch of cash and realize that the parts will not match or I have built an illegal rifle. Thanks. Beaurt |

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will go with the Eagle Arms lower. Still debating on neutering an M4 upper myself or buying a factory postban compliant upper. Will any type/make lower match up to any type/make upper? I'm aware that Colt used different size pin holes for their upper/lowers on some of their rifles (this could be some concern). Is this true for other manufacturers? Guess the bottom line is this...if I buy a pre ban M4 upper, then neuter the bayonet lug, replace the flash hider with a brake, and pin the stock open...will such a contraption..... 1. be able to be attached to a post ban lower with out any machining/grinding? and 2. be legal? Thanks. BlueDuckFAL |

| Check with pete-in-nh (Legal Transfers). He should have all of what you need. I suggest the RRA stripped lower and also Pete has the M4 profile 16" barrels with fake supressor. As long as you make sure you get a post-ban upper or the parts you will not have any problem. |

Ya might want to check out "Legal Tranfer's" posts on the Eqipment Exchange here, these are great RRA M4 barrels, I have one and they look cool too, not to mention complying w/ post-ban rules. He'll also build ya the upper complete if ya like.... Mike BTW - there are several like Pete-in-NH (legal Transfers) that sell lowers also and ya can get complete RRA uppers configured the same from Donnie at www.sableco.net and ALL are great to deal w/ and highly competitive w/ their pricing. |

I would second most of what the other guys are saying. For quality lowers that cost between $90-$120, you can look at Rock River, Eagle Arms, or Olympic. I can't remember how much DPMS charges. In terms of buying a preban and neutering or a post ban, I don't really see the use of getting the preban. Most shops, Model 1, J&T, M&A and the manufacturers will sell you either for the same price, so you are not saving anything and just creating more work for yourself. I would also recommend the RRA M4 upper for a couple of reasons. 1) you can get it with chrome-lining if you want 2) you can get the face flash suppressor (I say this because I really don't like muzzle brakes because they are not necessary on an AR and just redirect the noise to yourself or nearby shooters.) I can recommend www.sableco.net and a lot of people here like Legal Transfers (pete in NH) Oh yeah, you mentioned that you have had to headspace and time barrels with FALs, but you don't have to do that with ARs. And if you get one of the 'kits', all you have to assemble is the lower. However, with your experience, I would think that future builds could be done on both uppers and lowers from parts. good luck |
