I am preparing to swap barrels between two new uppers, the M-16 manual reccomends molibdinum disulfide grease for the barrel threads, and I am unable to find any locally.  What grease are you using on these threads?  Brand  name and supplier info would be appreciated.

Been here before-- Go to the HONDA automobile dealerships service dept. Ask 1 of the techs for a little packet of the grease that comes w/the HONDA brake pads. May have a spare packet, offer to buy him a drink from the machine as a token of the free material.

I used shotgun choke tube lube and didn't have a problem.

The old factory Colt shop manual says to use anti-seize compound.  Its readily available at any decent auto-parts store.  It is commonly used on steel spark plugs going into aluminum cylinder heads.  I have used it numerous times and with no disasembly problems what so ever.

You can order it from bushmaster also, found in the online catalog under gunsmithing.

Just go to your nearest auto parts store (Auto Zone, Discount Auto, etc) and check the labels. One container will last you several lifetimes and cost next to nothing. Don't pay extra $$ for specialty lubes.

Well, I was going to use my choke tube lube but I figured while I was placing my order for the Armorer's Action Block and Armorer's Wrench, I may as well order the Moly-Slide paste that they sell and say they use in their shop.
I've got enough of the stuff to lube nearly anything I want for a long time to come.

When I built mine I just used some Anti-Sieze. That silver stuff.  You can get it at any auto parts store.

I was told to stay away from any lube/anti-seize that contained graphite because it chews up aluminum...... stick with molydi and mixtures w/o graphite to be on the safe side.

I had heard that any cheap Molybdenum disulfide grease was suitable... now I'm not so sure.  Do we really need an anti-sieze product or will a dab of Moly-D do the trick?

You can purchase a 14 oz. tube of Aeroshell Grease No. 17 from www.oil-store.com for only $9.09.  It is a 5% Molybdenum Disulfide Grease that meets MIL-G-21164D specifications.  This is the same spec grease listed in Appendix D of the US Marine Corps Technical Manual for the M16A2 rifle.

When I ordered last year the price was a little lower, but they only charged me $4 shipping.

This is enough grease for several lifetimes of rebarreling your AR's.  Buy a tube and split it with your friends.

Come on people, moly-D is just fine. If you have some exotic high priced special lube, fine. If not, go to your nearest auto parts store...

Yes, stay away from the aluminum or copper solids anti-sieze lubricants.  Use ordinary automotive wheel bearing grease, which these days is usually a moly grease.

Great big Roger on that. People, don't make it more than it is. All you're trying to do is screw a steel piece to an aluminum piece W/o galling or stripping the threads. It ain't rocket science.[:D]
