I have been looking at different options for an AR15, and building my own seems to be the best option to get what I want at a reasonable price. I want to get all the info I can before ordering anything. Adco has kits as well as components, as does the Tannery. Who else is good? If I buy an 80% lower receiver, or lose my mind and get a 10% lower and spend serious time with my dad's mill, what material do I want to build it out of? I have seen T6 aluminum, as well as Beryllium, and a lot of other metal that seems exotic. Are there benefits to them, or just bragging rights? What is a gas block? If I buy a complete upper, is it really complete, or do I need a bolt group and charging handle? Is there any benefit to buying a complete lower, and is it complete? What other parts will I need that doesn't come with an upper or lower? If I can't buy everything at once, what should I buy as a group, and what first. I know if I buy an 80% lower I will need the lower parts kit. What else besides the buttstock? Should I build a flattop with a picatinney rail, or go with another rail system to mount optics or sights, or just go with an A2 setup? I will use he rifle for plinking, varmints at under 300 yards, and I know I will shoot some matches. I have been leaning towards wanting a 20" barreled A2, but the carbine should do as good a job at that range, shouldn't it? What else am I not thinking about? Thanks, Jim |
