How hard is it to install a gas tube? Barrel is attached to receiver and it was sent to me from a major manufacturer this way! No idea what someone was thinking.

It is one of the easest parts to finish with when you are completing an barreled upper. First you need to verify that the barrel nut torque is correct, then aline the barrel nut scallups so the hole in the receiver is precisely inline with the front sight housing. Insert the gas tube into the hole in the upper, then push the GT forward to seat in the sight housing. Make sure the roll pin holes in the GT and the sight housing are inline, then put in the roll pin. Thats it. Your done except if there is any drag or out of alinement between the GT end and the gas key on your carrier.

Know where I can get the roll pins or shorty gas tube for a 16" DPMS?  Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread!

Thanks. I am waiting for a reply from the company that screwed up and forgot to include the gas tube.If is not hard then I may do it myself instead of sending it back and waiting another six months.Do you have to loosen the gas block? Mine is a dovetail/bolts on gas block.

Go to the EE and look for CMMG. He should have what you need. Worst case, you could always order from DPMS, Bushmaster, or Armalite online.

Nope, just follow JohnM's instructions with one addition: make sure the bolt and carrier are removed from the upper receiver before you start. Not only will it be safer (no ammo in rifle), but it will also be easier to install the gas tube.

Thanks again! THE COMPANY is sending me the gas tube and said it would be easy to install.WE WILL SEE! I hope Mr.Murphy is gone for a few minutes so the tube will slide into the little holes with a minimum of effort. Should I lube the ends of the tube?

A little heads up.

When you install the tube, off set the bend to one side of the barrel, and insert it into the gas hole in the upper, then back pull back on the tube and inset it into the front gas block/tower.  I use a paperclip threw the tower and gas tube retaining hole to confirm that the tube is installed all the in the tower.  A slight pull forward on the tube will confirm this.  Then just pull the straighten paper clip and install the roll pin.

At this point, slowly insert the carrier into the upper and verify that the gas tube is lined up with the carrier key.  If not, you will need to slightly bend the gas tube to get the correct alignment.

Also, once your done installing the gas tube, check it for flow.  Since you stated that you are using a block, the gas ports may be out of alignment, due to the clock being installed after the barrel was installed.

Hope this helps.

Go to your local hardware store, maybe 15 cents.
