Do any of you mount your light under your handguard/fore end rails?

I don't on my rifles but I do not see a downside if it is for comfortable for you then do it.

As long you can activate the light and shoot with it there then go for it. what light and what handguard are you running, also what muzzle device?

Yes.  I prefer the light at 6 oclock.  It keeps the light in line with the muzzle which I find helpful in barricade shooting and/or clearing corners so the light neither leads or lags the barrel.  I have my IR laser at 12 oclock so that spot is used up.  I use pressure pads to get the switches to work where my hand is.  Top or bottom mount is also sling friendly and seems to balance better for me.  Others mileage may vary.

I have a Spike's tactical BAR 7 rail and a Streamlight tlr-1s. Muzzle devise is a Spike's Dynacomp.
This is presently my set up:

At this position, the light seems to take up some space inside the gun bag and bulges out. I'm thinking of mounting it in front of my RVG.

There's a lot of credibility to the slicing the pie mentality with the light mounted at 6 o'clock.  As long as you only deal with vertical barriers/walls-going over a fence/wall for example might not be as good.   Everything is a trade-off, somewhere the best plans can still go awry.

If you're doing a lot/significant amount of shooting-night qualification or competition, that position makes a lot of sense.  The smoke tends to drift up...

Thanks. I may try to change out my light's position in the 6 o'clock. Seems to make sense putting it there.

The shadow cast by the barrel will be in a particularly bad place with the light on the bottom.

Trying out the 6 o'clock mounting, I think it cast less obstructive shadow as compared to the 3 o'clock position whereby the shadow is relatively larger due to the gas block and frontsight.

The size of the shadow isn't the problem. The location is. It's right on someone's hands of I have the rifle pointed at them. Depending on configuration of course.

That concern actually also popped in my mind and tried it out in a target silouhette about 20 feet from me and my POA with the light on was at the lower part of the head/face and center mass with the target height simulating a 5'7" individual.

I dislike the shadow from the 6 o'clock mounting position and prefer the 3 o'clock.

I'm a fan of the 11 to 1 o clock range. I typically use suppressors though so mounting at the 6 is going to cause a lot of shadowing.

I don't notice much if any shadowing at 6 on my SBR with can.  Others mileage may vary but this isn't anything that bothers me in any way.

What kind of light is that in your picture?  I like how slim profile it is.

Surefire M600C with Vampire IR/White head.  I own 3 of them right now.  Best light I've had.
