Local shop had a cool accessory for carbine with NV that I want to learn about.
I didn't catch the brand but the sales rep said it's a weapon light (looked like surefire) and the second smaller "light" is a IR illuminator. The unit is a tandem unit side-by-side in one mount. The guy said it's in a Larue mount. I looked around different web sights and can't find exactly what I looked at. It's possible this is an older unit, but in new condition, in the display case. The unit runs on separate batteries, one for the IR and the other for the weapon light. The price was about $260 I believe. How good are the IR illuminators? Would it brighten dark areas say at 100 yards? Any idea what I was looking at? |

Not sure but this might belong in the Light and Lasers section but that is for a mod to decide
You should look into the Surefire 952V which gives you both white light and IR with just a twist of the bezel. They can be found used or slightly used on ebay and even here from time to time for around that price point or a little higher. It is the best way to go these days to get both forms of light. http://www.surefire.com/M952V-MillenniumUniversalWeaponLight |

If I wanted an IR illuminator, I would without question go for one of these: http://hdssystems.com/?id=Edc&mType=Clicky&mName=E1B&mOut=Ir It is almost twice as powerful as the brightest surefire IR product, and a fraction of the price. Good luck breaking it. |

It sounds as though you were looking at the "Pentagonlight MD2 Tactical Illumination System," which combines a white tactical light and a "high-power" (Pentagonlight's words, not mine) infrared illuminator side pod. This set-up was used heavily by the USMC, until a lawsuit by Surefire essentially put Pentagonlight out of business.
The lights are connected by a main body, with the white light being operated by either a rear push button or a remote pressure pad, and the IR illuminator operated by a rear push button only. The mount for the system is either a single lever A.R.M.S. #17S, or Pentagonlight's own rail-grabber mount which employs a four-wing thumb screw. I have yet to see one with a Larue mount, but that certainly doesn't mean that they're not out there. The unit 's were well-made, and generally were comparable to Surefire products. There were two major complaints about the MD2 system: One was that it used two different types of batteries. The white light (which had a Xenon bulb) was powered by standard "123A" batteries, but the IR illuminator used the much less common 1/3N type. The second complaint was that the IR illuminator was underpowered. These units are still plentiful, and they come up for sale on the EE every so often. There are several on ebay as this is being written. Unfortunately, repair/replacement parts are virtually nonexistant. I hope this helps! |

I decided to purchase an IR unit for my gun. I currently have a Surefire M95 weapon light that I like. They sell a conversion kit that just replaces the head with the updated white light / IR head. So for $299 (Brownells SUREFIRE KM3 conversion kit) I get to keep the spare head for my other gun and have the updated head with IR for my decated NV set-up. thanks everybody! |
