just ordered customized flashlight for the evil pigs. It is 3 D cell size exterior and now that I ordered it I need to find a picatinny rail mount solution. Would like it to be quick release or slide on like my current 1" dia. Fenix light.  Mfg. says 1.55" dia tube.  I'm afraid now that I've ordered the light I may have trouble finding quick detachable mounting. Anybody ever mount an old style maglite on their AR??  Hope I didn't waste my money on this badazz light and have no way to mount it!!   Thanks

Wait...maybe I misunderstand you. Are you saying you are looking for a way to mount a 3-D-cell Maglite onto your AR15??? The big honking 18 inch long old-school cop flash light that was used to cranially adjust attitudes of reticent trangressors?

Close!  Actually this one is 12" instead of 18".  I think the 18" used 5 or 6 D cells. This one is the size for 3 D cells. The diameter is the same I believe.  This light is a custom light that from what I can tell is about as bright an led light that I can find . I'm hoping to be able to see these hogs at 300-400 yds when used with my 4X Trijicon.  Don't have the light yet so I'm not sure if it will meet my expectations. It is supposed to throw 2100 lumens out the front, where my Fenix TK-30 is rated for 630 emitter lumens I'm guessing 500 or so out the front lumens.

It weighs 2 lbs so it will be large and heavy but i can't find any other light with as much throw and lumens that is any smaller or lighter.  Alot of the time I'm in the truck looking for the pigs with my thermal viewer..in this case weight really isn't an issue. When I'm walking I usually use my sling so I can suck up a couple of pounds of flashlight if it means when I see the pigs at 3-400 yds with my thermal, I can hit the light and aquire target.  Guess I'll find out if it works the way I hope it will.

Any ideas of how to mount an 1 1/2 " diameter light to my picatinny rail, hopefully with quick detach would be appreciated.  Don't want to resort to duct tape!

I guess the old saying is true "Everything in Texas is bigger" including this dude packing a AR with D-Cell flashlight on the end.

I would suggest using a pair of HD shooting sticks

Have 4 maglites, I have never seen a mount for a rail, it would have to be custom.

I'll see if I can dig up anything.

WHY?

When there are so many smaller, lighter and brighter lights out there today.

Good question.

I wouldn't mount a 3 D-cell maglite on any gun.

Look elsewhere man...there are better and lighter options.

Gunnerpalace, thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Ol Crow/Lancelot, not sure if you read the entire thread.  My application is specific.  Triyng to find a light(even if it's a little too big or heavy) which can illuminate predominantly black pigs from 300 - 400 yds.  Hopefully you guys can recommend a different light than what I ordered.  Hell, I'll keep it and use it as a regular flashlight but it must be LED (instant on), must mount to my rails, Must have tremendous throw and have enormous brightness because the black hair of the pigs is a real challenge.

I've looked all over the interweb what I came up with was this Varapower 2000 dedomed. Others in the same class (O-Light)maybe brighter but EVEN larger than this one.  This has 80K lux, 2100 out the front lumens which means its actually measured.  If you guys can recommend a mounting solution or better light- I'm all over it.

I started with a Streamlight then went to a Fenix TK30 with extension tube which gives it 630 lumens, probably 500 or so measured out the front.
The Fenix is a very good light but in real world it throws maybe 150 yds maybe a little more. I've researched catapult , surefire bunches of others, cant find anything besides this light that will work.  Remember this isn't for clearing a room it need huge throw. I can see pigs in my fields at night with thermal imager, need light to light them up so I can "light them up", from distance.  Thanks!

You could JB WELD a rail mount to it. May not be pretty, but should work fine.

Biggerstick, thanks for the reply. That is better than what I came up with. This thing doesn't have to be real pretty just hold the light onto a rail while I'm in the truck or sometimes when I stalk to shoot these critters. As soon as I'm home, it comes off anyway. Thanks.  Looks like the biggest "standard" rail mount solution I can find is 1.1" dia.

You may be able to use heavy duty zip ties and strap it to a QD mount.

When he runs out of ammo he can hit them with a maglite

I understood you its not actually a Maglite, but similar, so you described it that way.
it is auminum. Maybe have some clamps welded to the light that would be secure.

Mount it way back on the lower rail so it looks like a 203.

PIcs man i gottta see this!!!

Duct Tape.

If it will hold a car in the air, I am sure it will hold a flashlight on an AR15.

Are you planning on beating the pigs with it or something?

I bet it would fit nicely in the barrel of an M203

I like the idea you have, but I see a problem. Even with the huge lumen numbers out the front with the big mag bodied led thing, you probably will not get 300 yards of throw out of it.
You're more likely to get a very well lit up 75 yards or less unless it has a focusing lens assembly or a a-spherical front lens, either of those setup are going to require you to focus the light depending on the yardage.

I'm somewhat at a loss of what to suggest to light up something at 300 yards that isn't going to be 5lbs of light... I have a Dereelight CL1H V4 1S Cree XP-G R5 with a asperical head on it for my long range light but I haven't tried it over 100 yards... yet, and I don't have a range finder to confirm distances.

In the mean time the candlepowerforums.com flashlights>spotlights area might be worth doing some digging in...

Thanks for the replies...still looking.  The weapon is bushmaster 16" with quad rails. I found a Larue mount that is like 5" that is quick detachable. I guess i could buy it amd drill a couple of holes in it and attach the light with black wireties to the Larue piece. Problem is Larue part is well over $100.  Wonder if someone else makes quick detachable rail that costs less $???

I spent alot of time on candlepower forums and a few other sites. This appeared to be the most "throw" for the $ with the least weight/bulk although it is heavy and bulky.  I shot 1 pig last night and like usual after they get running they get hard to see quickly even in fairly open areas. I just run out of light.  My light is being shipped to me this week if anyone is interested I'll post a review on how far it shines and how useful it is for my particular task. Probably I'm about the only guy who needs to shoot, at night, at long distance but it is what it is!

Can you tell me more about the maglite itself?

2100 Lumens seems like something I need.... Where did you get it/how much?

MW,  Name of the mfg is Lambda Lights. The model is Varapower 2000. Best I can tell they take the shell from a maglight install different led, bigass copper heatsink, modify the reflector and put a variable output dial which you can "dim" the light or go full bright or anywhere in between.  I have no idea if the light will operate as advertised.  I'm kinda trusting several of the posters on candlepower forums for my info.  I paid $233 for the light this includes shipping.  It uses 4 C cell rechargeable batteries (NiMH).  I think the runtime is like 30 minutes at high power probably a really long time on lower power.  One of the posters told me 300 yds would not be a problem...guess I'll find out later this week.
I can say that the guy that builds these is great to deal with... He did worry about using the variable power dial on the light because he had no idea how recoil would affect it.  I told him I'd roll the dice and let him know how it worked out.  From my research the baddest light (LED) for throw and lumens is a light called the O-Light SR-90.  It's bigger than the Varapower and weighs like 3-4 pounds, it comes with a shoulder strap if that tells you anything.  There was another model from O-Light ..SR-91 that is shorter and more compact but still pretty big.  I figured for the money I'd try the Varapower and try to find a way to stick it on my rifle.  I think the Varapower is like 2 lbs. which is heavy but for what I'm using if for it's no big deal I have 2 other led rail mount flashlights to put back on the gun when I get back from hunting the evil menace.  I hope it works out and will let you know.
