| I'd like to find a weapon light with strobe capability and enough output to ID targets easily to at least 100 yards. Suggestions? How many lumens do folks here recommend? I'm leaning towards the Olight M30 at the moment (I know some will say "Chinese junk" but the reviews I've read have all been very positive and it seems a good value at $110, not that I'm unwilling to spend more). Other suggestions? Is this overkill for the throw distance I'm hoping for? It will be trigged by a tape switch. Weight and ability to mount via quick-release may also be considerations. Thanks in advance! |

Thanks in advance! Please take a look at our TNVC Q5 Drop In along with our Surefire G2 packages. Hard to beat at $78.00. There is also a pretty good and on-going thread here about the line up. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=20&t=394099 Hope this helps. |
| Already being the owner of a G2 I had considered that option, however it is my understanding there is no Surefire light available with a stobe function? If anyone knows of a stobe mod for the G2 that is simultaneously useable with a tape switch, I would definately consider it. if anyone has thoughts on the utility of a stobe (or lack thereof) I would love to hear them. The disorienting effect seemed like it would be handy in an HD situation (at least they disorient the hell outa me!) |

In contacting thousands of suspects on the street at night I have never felt the need to "stobe" them. Strobing a person only disorients them while there is a light in their eyes and it works about as well as just shining a steady beam in their eyes in my experience. If you want to strobe something just push the tailcap really fast. Also, on a weapon mounted light you are going to have your hands full with the gun and selecting different light features will be to burdensome. |

Thanks for the perspective hkusp9. It's not a need, but that disorientation simply seemed handy if encountering a bad guy in ones home. I imagine that a burglar being shined with that strobe (my apologies for the repeated spelling error above) would have a harder time navigating a foreign environment (my home) than with a constant light source. I also imagine there may be some (albeit little) intimidation factor as well. It just seems like one more tool to gain advantage under what would for me, a very high-stress situation. Also, the light would remain on the strobe setting while in the home, so no fumbling with light settings in the heat of things. There are lots of open fields near my home as well, so switching to a solid high-power mode is desirable for scanning those environments. |

Strobe is a fantastic and very useful item for a handheld flashlight. I personally like the Gladius. However, I do not see the need for strobe on a rifle. If you have your rifle out, it's a high enough risk event that you should not be fiddling with buttons and knobs. |

The Olight is a lot of light for the money. If you must have the strobe, it's probably the only viable option in that price range. I prefer Simple controls. The upgraded Surefire G2 linked above is an awesome deal, and has a simple momentary push button, or a twist for constant on.
The Olight has a forward push-button switch that allows momentary on, and you can access the strobe with the side button. (A light without a momentary on has no place on a weapon!!!!) Personally, I am probably going to get a Fenix K11 R4, just as soon as I can find a description of how the switch works. I think it has momentary on with a touch, full push for full power on, and a second full push for low power. It has 285 Lumens peek. is all metal, and would be a good choice for you if you can live without the strobe. You can get it from Fenix for about $75 shipped. |

The switch is a momentary on/push all the way for constant on. To get the Turbo mode, you just twist the head to tight. Then to reduce the brightness, unscrew it about 1/8 turn. I like the Fenix because of the dual modes. It's better to have less than 200 lumens when using a light indoors because you'll get a lot of backsplash off walls and mirrors and blind yourself. But, outdoors or inside a large building like a warehouse, having the extra lumens can be a very good thing. I have owned several very nice and expensive Surefire lights. I prefer the Fenix because of the multi brightness settings. |

As for the M30 I think it's a little on the large side for a weapons mount. |
