So I really want to purchase a light for my rifle. I'm really not a fan of VFGs since when I hold the weapon it feels very un-natural to me. "OK" you guys are saying, "just place a tape switch somewhere along the quadrail" Well that's what I was leaning towards untill recently some people were advising me to stay away from tape switches. I'm not sure why I was advised to "stay away" from them. The opinions were that they are not reliable and the wire can get snagged etc. As far as the "snagging" issue, I run Larue index clips so the wire should tuck away nicely.

Im confused, there are just so many products and options out there. Do/can people run lights w/o tape switches or VFGs?
Thanks

you can run a light with or without a tape switch. The tapeswitches are more prone to wear, but they are very good options. Your use of the LT clips are a good idea.

If you end up using a surefire XM switch, you can either use push button or wire tape switch. there are others out there that have them....even in surefire with the X300 ST. pic what feels good for you and your use. Train with it, mod where needed. train some more.

I am setting mine up like 87GN has his with a FSB adapter (midwest Industries makes them). I think that this is one of the only great option on a weapon with Carbine length handguards, and a good option on a Midlength hardguard weapon. IMHO, this is the best option when you take into account cost, weight, and simplicity.

I use this mount and like it very much:

I don't like the FSB to be obstructed and the mount places the light far enough forward that it does not create an intrusive shadow.

I run a TLR-1 with the C4 LED bulb.  I cover the lens with a cheap Butler Creek flip-up cap to minimize flash and protect from muzzle blast.

Under $175 for the mount and light.  That's pretty easy on the wallet.

Plus, I mount my VCAS to the ring using an HK-style snap hook.

The company is called Custom Defensive Products and their customer service is top-shelf.
