I'm looking into purchasing a surefire M500a built in handguard light.  Does anyone happen to know if the handguars are the M4 style (fat) handguards or the smaller handguards?

Good question.  I have been considering getting this for my Colt 6920.  I'm also curious.

Does the m500 prevent you from using a web sling adapter that wraps/velcros around the hand guard?

Are there any competitor products?

They are like the fat kind.

Most velcro straps that go around the handguard should be adjustable.  Because the primary incandescent light and the LED lights are mounted near the front, you can't put such a strap all the way at the front.  I decided to use one of the side sling swivels that were originally designed to be used when an M203 is mounted.

Do you have a link or pics for the side sling swivel? My side sling adapter hits the LED's on the M500. Sorry for the hijack

ETA:  OP-  the M500 handguards are about the same size as the "fat" m4 handguards.

I like mine just fine, had it about 2 years. Mine is actually the M500AB, but I have a spare M3 bexel that can I can swap out in it. The M3 bezel with the lower lumen light makes this weird cat eye light shape. The tubro head, corrects this and increases the throw.

As for the front sling attachment. I have not found one that does not rub the LEDs or starts tweaking them something fierce. I am going to try another mount I found on line and post the results a little later, but it will be a few months away since I am out of country.

If ya'll really want to use the side-sling adapter with a M500, mount the M500 upside down (light will be at 8 o'clock). Controls take a little bit getting used to.

I don't think my adapter is different from yours.  Strangely enough, it doesn't seem to change the overall light output very much.  I think it is because the LEDs' light is so diffuse already.  I do mount it "backwards", i.e. with the swivel swinging towards the front, since the LEDs would block the movement to the back anyway.  The shape of the block also limits the rotation, so it doesn't apply much pressure to the LED assembly.
