Ok, so many very bright lights out there. But, from a LEO's perspective - too much light can be a bad thing. Turning on your rifle mounted light can give away your position, destroy your night vision (your eyes) which may take several minutes to recover. I've always held my hand over my light's lense to restrict the output but I'm sure theres a better way. I was thinking of gluing a keychain type momentary LED on the forgrip. Needs to be just bright enough to see where your going without whitewashing your vision or giving you away. Don't want to step in a septic tank with the lid missing. (been several years but still funny as hell) Looking for ideas. Anyone? |

I had the same issue. Not the septic tank, but the same light needs. You have a couple of options. A. You can lay out the coin to get a Surefire M910A series with the built in red navigational LED's. This isn't a bad idea really. I kind of kick myself for not going this route. If you went this route, get the Unit from Larue. stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=9 Expensive, yes. But add the price of a main light, a forward vertical grip, the secondary LED light (see option B) and the overall simplicity of the system vs. several random units working together. It has better controls to activate and deactivate the unit also. You won't have to take your hand off of the Forward Vertical grip to toggle the unit on or off. When added all together, the overall weight savings and durability should add up. B. Get a Surefire Helmet Light and a Picatinny rail mount from Tango Down. Here is some propaganda from Surefire. # Made of durable glass-filled nylon polymer and neoprene # O-ring sealed, watertight body # Two toggle switches and a pressure switch for total control # White and blue LEDs and infrared IFF LED beacon # Long runtime from a single 123A battery with 10-year shelf life # Easily removable for servicing, transfer to other helmets, # Size: 2.2 W x 2.6 H x 1.3 thick including mount # Weight: 3.1 oz. w/battery & mount # Output/Runtime: White High: 19.2 lumens/6 hrs Blue High: 2.5 lumens/20 hrs White Med: 5.0 lumens/28 hrs Blue Med: 0.8 lumens/48 hrs White Low: 1.4 lumens/48hrs Blue Low: 0.3 lumens/96 hrs Tertiary IFF beacon: 1.72 mW/120 hrs I currently run option B.

www.lasermax.com/downloads/White_Paper_Colt_CGL_(color).pdf Will be out in AUG this year, Traveling light can be in Red,White or Blue |
| I run a Seoul modded Gladius and just set the second position of the tailcap (constant on) to start from minimum power to max instead of from the top down. I use that position as a Nav light now and by holding down my button it will increase to full power in about 2-3 seconds if I want that for any reason. Does not help you but I picked that option specifically because I desired a Nav function. The Surefire helmet light looks like a great idea! |

just got an email today from Surefire regarding their new E2D LED. Yes, it's a handheld light by birth, but if you couple it with a Vltor Scout Mount, you have 2 lights in one. The new E2D LED has 2 light settings, a 5 lumen setting, and a 120 lumen setting. Price is on par with some of the other options out there right now, around $120, plus ~$30 for the mount. I'm really considering getting one for EDC. |
that looks like it's right up a lot of people's alleys, pending cost of course |
The "LITE" is made by Insight Technology and it is called a "Low Intensity Tactical Illuminator" and you will get over 500 hours of run time off of one DL-123 battery. They are used as navigation lights or with breaching shotguns. It has a high and low intensity setting and the LED is green in color. Pat |
