I've got an M1A with an ultimak rail.  I'm wondering how I should go about mounting a light.  I've done about two hours worth of research and am just confused.

This isn't my gun but this is what an ultimak looks like:

I suppose with that I'd have to get one of those (very expensive, $75) GG&G offset light mounts.

I could also get one of these though:

That's from Fulton Armory and it's $60.

But what is the cheapest Surefire I can get away with?  What's the story on tape switches?

I don't plan on using this rifle for anything.  It is just a safe/range queen.  The rifle, ammo, and web gear are ready to go for SHTF but I seriously doubt things'll ever come to that.  So I just want it to look cool and have cool accessories.

The best advice I can give you is contact Calvin at brightflashlights and I'm sure he can hook you up with a nice, affordable light for your rifle.

There are several places you can get a short picatinney rail, then look at Command Arms for something like this:

The cheapest quality light I've seen used in a Surefire G2. It is about $30 and will give you 60 lumens for 1.25 hours or so, it is bright!

Next up is the G2 LEd version. It gives 80 lumens and runs for 12 hours. The LED will withstand the recoil better than a bulb, but it is twice the price.

Amega makes a scout mount for the M1A and have optional side mounts for lights on them.

I haven't tried their M1A mounts, but their Mini 14 mounts are taller and heavier than the Ultimak scout mount, and are not as close to Picatinny spec.
