Anyone know anything about these? How they compare to OTALs etc? Just checking as I also think they are military only. Any info would be nice.

As far as I know the CVL (AKA PEQ-5) units are not restricted, they are visible units.  Insight has a hard time though selling to the public but I have these units in stock as well.  As for the comparison to the OTAL, they are VERY close in relationship. Both 635nm wavelength, with a range out to 500m and both water proof down to 20m (66feet).  Weight wise just .2oz lighter for the CVL.  I would give the edge to the OTAL for durability and the option for a throw lever.  Also the OTAL edges on the price..The OTAL with the screw mount, bout $465.00 (good street price), while the CVL at $575.00.  One other point is the CVL is Mil-Spec approved while the OTAL just states it meets Mil-Spec.

My personal preference is the CVL for night use with a NVD, as it blooms a bit less than the OTAL.  I always tell my NV customers, if stealth is not a concern, a visible laser works darn well through a NOD!  Hope this helps

I'm in the dark about these types of lasers as well.  Can you see the beam projected onto a target at 100m through a 4x scope in daylight?

You might also want to check the specs for the beam size at 100m.  It might be too large or small for whatever you are doing.

And I bought it--thanks Vic!

I've only used an OTAL twice, but I prefer the CVL.  So did Uncle Sugar and the .mil folks who selected it for the SOPMOD program. As Vic mentioned above, the CVL is a bit more $, but I prefer the CVL's low-profile shape, very light weight (just 4.7 oz. w/battery), and it's easy to use windage and elevation adjustments (just like an AN/PEQ-2).  As for durability, I can't really compare, but my CVL appears very ruggedly made. YMMV.

Interestingly, there have also been a number of pictures coming out of the Sandbox lately showing US SOF with the CVL (they call it the AN/PEQ-5) on their weapons.  While I don't know why exactly that is, I suspect that being "painted" with a visible laser could have a significant calming effect on some folks...

Kudos to Vic, as well, for great service...highly recommended.

Can either one be seen at 25 yards in broad daylight?
