Can you take an M96 and make it an M95? I'm just wondering 'cause I'm thinking about getting the M951xm07. It looks like the M96 is just an M95 with a threaded extension added between the lamp and the body to let it hold one more battery.

Yes, you can go up from a M95x or down from a M96/97/98x by simply replacing the light modules.  Now the M96x is a different bezel/module format so you can't just remove the ext. and have a 6v setup, you'll need the LU60 (or L36) modules to convert to 6v.
