I would like some opinions on this light.  I am not on a SWAT team or headed to Iraq.  I am a former Marine and I want to do some carbine courses.  A friend of mine has an M-3x and it is small, light, and seems bright.  I can get one online for $129.  Thoughts?

There are better choices, ergonomically and lighting wise for the same price range.  The only advantage the M3X would have is that you could mount it on a pistol as well.

BrightFlashlights has surefire based rifle mount packages in that price range.  For example, a G2 with a shock bezel, clicker tail cap, and Daniel Defense mount for $141 delivered:

BrightFlashlights is an AR15.com dealer with a forum in the industry section, and is good to go.  See THIS POST for SF rifle mount packages.

My wife gave me a M3X about 2 weeks ago on my birthday (for my patrol carbine). It works great, I can pick out the metal IPSC target out to 100 yds. I have it mounted on a GG&G offset light mount, and can switch it out with my Glock 21 Tactical light if the batteries take a dump or the bulb blows out. I think that is about what she paid, too.

It's a great light...especially if you own a Glock with rails..throws a great light and it's very light wt.

For short range work on a carbine...that you wanted to keep light wt. it's ideal...and you can use it
for both your handgun and rifle.

While I mainly like using SF gear on rifles (due to cross compatability reasons) I have zero problems recommending the M3X.  The M3X is an excellent light that is better in every way over the original M3 and it's beam performance is superb.  The only thing I would recommend is taking along a couple of extra lamps in a sturdy case, trying to find replacement  lamps in the field will be more complicated than the SF P60's.

What is the difference between the M3x for pistols and the M3x for long guns?

M3X for long guns uses a different backplate:

and a tape switch:

and a different latch bar:

so that it works like this:
