Apparently opinions are not like assholes.  I have been trying to get some help on this for the past 2 days and no one has any strong opinions.

Surefire M910ab, sells for under 500 (when you get around MAP pricing).

Thanks.  I am not big on their grip mount.  I think I will go rail mounted instead with a Tangodown grip.  Is is more in-line as far as grip height is concerned.

You have a ton of options if you want something with more performance than your 6v lights; starting with the cheapest -

Streamlight TL-3 (no tactical accessories or upgrades)
Surefire 9P built up with the Z32
Pentagon X3 (& X4 - I can't wait to get those in)
Laser Devices OP-9 weaponsgrade lights
Surefire Classic 9v weaponsgrade module buildup light assy.
Surefire Millennium 9v weaponsgrade module buildup light assy.
L.D. 0P-9 with ARMS mount
SF 9v M961/2
SF 9v M971/2
SF 12v M981

I'm a big fan of the Surefire M500 series dedicated forends, as well as the Surefire M962 rail mounted light. Unless you need to jacklight deer from orbit these lights should throw plenty of light (125/225 lumens) for your needs.

With too much light is very easy to wash out your optics reticle at night-so the biggest, baddest, brightest light available isn't necessarily the best.

Surefire M97 is hard to beat on performance, under 500 dollars. I love mine, no regrets, and the turbo head is a brute!

I have a M500AB and its real bright. The only downside to it is that i cant mount anything else.
I might have it for sale in the near future. I am thinking of going all surefire on my AR. Im thinking of putting a Surefire foregrip light, Laser, and M73 rail.

surefire
there are many models under $500
even more if you go used, like in the EE section

some people even think the 9volt models can be too bright for indoor use.

If you want the brightest, I'd say the M500B (500 lumens).  If you want the most practical and useful, I'd say M962 but you have to add the cost of a rail into the equation.

Gus,

The M500B looks like it is as big as the handguard area.

littlebeanduet,

What do you mean that you can't mount anything else.  Is it too heavy/bulky?

That is an interesting point.  Maybe I get a turbo head to blind momentarily and the activate another to track?

It pretty much is!  I use the "B" head on an M510 handguard nowadays (20" barrel, A2 type). I might be selling an M500A (much smaller head but still very bright) pretty soon...

Surefire M96x.  Proven, rugged, extremely dependable.

The Laser Devices OP-9 for meapon mounting is a very close second.  It's just not modular like the SF MU lights.

I'm waiting to make a verdict on the Night Ops Gladius, but it promises to be the best light for just about any purpose under the sun.

I think the TACM III is one of the most underrated lights on the market.  I mounted one on my Bushmaster carbine several years ago, and it's proved to be a very bright, extremely rugged, even good-looking unit. And at less than $100.00 mounted, I think it's a tremendous bargain for those on a budget. In fact, I can't think of any reason yet to replace mine with a more expensive model. They're available with on/off/momentary water-proof switches or remote pressure switches. It's shock resistant, light as a feather, and puts out 105.5 lumens drawn from 2 three-volt lithium batteries. Given a $500 budget, of course, one could certainly find something more sophisticated, heavier, and brighter. One could also mount one of these effective sleepers and still have more than $400 left over for other high-speed accessories. I think I've seen them listed as low as $75.

Since acquiring the TACM III back in 2001, I’ve purchased three high-end SureFires for various other weapons and an LDI Universal Las/Tac for my wife’s Walther P99, but I still can’t bring myself to replace that “cheap” old TACM III on my carbine.
