I am toying with the idea of building an LED system. I got lots of time and I used to be an electronic technician.

There are a few hobby flashlight sites that I've seen. I like the strobing light from Blackhawk, but I don't like the price. I know you need to make a buck, but that is a lot of cash for a light. I have several Surefires, so I can spend the cash - but LED's should be a little cheaper than conventional bulbed lights.

I have an LED tail lamp for my mountain bike. It has regular LED's mounted to a pcb and a 3 volt power pack. It has a strobe like effect to it. I was thinking about getting some of the new 10000 mcd white led's and replacing them for the red led's installed. I could then get a stobe like effect as well as solid burn.

Anybody else toy with this?

Here are some hobby parts sites:

LED's

I was also thinking about a conversion head for my M3 or 6P.

Thanks in advance.

Several others including myself have had an interest in a light weight, streamlined nav light system similar to the Surefire 900 but adaptable to the Surefire 6 and 9 volt series lights.  Put something together, market it, make a million.

I'm working on a nav light system right now that is independant of my main lighting system.

I am also looking at making a main LED type light with the strobing effect as well. I just don't want to pay several hundred dollars for it.

I'll keep updates on this and let you know progress.

If you guys want a good nav light in either red or white, I use the Inova Micro Light LED in red. Its real nice for three reasons: Its LED is shrouded so you can't be spotted from the side; It has a constant on and a momentary switch; AND its cheap.   Just get some velcro and strick it anywhere you want.

I've got a Photon. Thought about it but not what I want. I want something that mounts to the rails or clips to the Surefire I got mounted.

Still working on the details.

I'm going for recessed and probably clip to the 6P I have mounted with a pressure switch independant of the Surefire. White in color, but can be other colors as well.

Sounds good rtech.  I will watch to see what you come up with.  We are thinking the same thing.  I want a hard mount or QD mount for the eventual nav light as well to go with a QD mount Surefire 961 9volt.

How about a system that screws on at the base of a surefire, isolates the tail switch to the main batteries and allows the tail cap to be used as usual.  This would add length to the back of the unit as the tail cap would be placed behind the added on part.  There would be a button hanging off this portion to activate the unit (over under style).  If it were analog it could simply cut power to the main light to create low levels from the main light and if it were digitally regulated it could allow a very small current to pass instead of using a reisitor and light up an LED in front of the button while power was low enough on the main light to not light it or make it VERY dim (dimmer than the LED).  There would be the issue of the severe ghosting on the body but an extension could be made at the front of the push button to push it forward to the bezel, even create a couple bends in the extension to put the LED all the way out and round to the edge up the bezel while following the contours of the body and bezel.  The unit could be adjustable to provide 6' Oclock position from any mounting position instead of indexing to the threading in one position.

The design of surefires will not allow this to be added at the bezel but I dont see why they cant be added at the rear.  All I want is a bunch of free Surefires if they pick up this idea and if someone else makes them I want a bunch of LED add on units...
