| Wasn't sure what section to put this in. But does anyone know if a decent gun safe? I have 4 pistols and three long gubs and just kind of have them stashed through the house. It drives me nuts and don't like the idea with two little ones at home. They know not to mess with them and are kept out of their reach. But just don't like how I have them all over. I don't need anything fancy or even fireproof for that matter. Just something that locks so I can have them locked up. Looking to spend no more than $225 really. I know it won't be too of the line but anyone have any recommendations |

look on youtube, spend all the money you want, if somebody else wants in they'll get in
I have 4 stack on gun cabinets in my house and they do the job just fine, keeps them out of the reach of people I love and don't want accidentally hurting themselves or each other they also keep random people who aren't prepared from just walking off with them. I also use my head and don't advertise all over the place where or how or even if I have guns in the house I'm also pretty sure it'd be a real pain in the ass getting in my cabinets, they're all in difficult places to access and lag bolted to the wall and floor all you guys that think you need a $2000 safe are fooling yourselves. You need to get those guns secured, you'll never forgive yourself if anyone gets hurt with YOUR gun because it wasn't locked up I'd reccommend this one it'll do the job nicely and plenty big enough for future growth |

I almost went the cheap route myself. I couldn't get past the fact that I was looking to store thousands of dollars in guns in a cheap sheet metal cabinet. This might be where you want to pony up a little cash and get some real piece of mind. he's currently storing them on the top shelf in his closet any steel cabinet will be better for his guns and his kids |
| At that price get an on site job box home Depot has a rigid 48" box for $289, but often goes on sale to $250. In fact they were $250 in november. It lacks the fire protection of a safe, but the gauge of steel is typically the same found on consumer safes in the big box stores. |

Get a $100 Stack On until you can save for the real deal. They can be purchased at Walmart. I keep my ammo/mags/accessories in my old Stack On so it won't be money wasted when you upgrade. This is exactly what I did. If you live in a decent area, have decent OPSEC, and home security they should be pretty safe. Part of good OPSEC is putting your safe/locker in a place that's harder to find. For $200+ you can get locker for the majority of things, and a little bedside quick access "safe." |

If you are just trying to keep the firearms away from the kids you have a lot of options. I purchased a large construction tool box from Home Depot and built horizontal racks to lay rifles inside it. You can build a double layer of racks if your buy more firearms. Ammo cans can go on the bottom as can any other loose items. I think I have $300 in it.
I keep my less valuable stuff in mine. Any steel box will keep your children away and slow punks down. A real safe is needed for quality firearms. I drilled holes in the floor of the Job Box and bolted heavy duty ball bearing mounted swiveling wheels to the bottom. You could weld them on if you like. This allows me to move it anywhere I want and made it too big to carry back up the stairs without removing the wheels. |

know not to mess with them and are kept out of their reach. Get them locked up. It won't be long before they start having friends over. Been there. Before I could afford what I have now, I was a young dad with firearms. I bought one of those Stack On lockable 8 gun cabinets, and bolted it to the wall. It kept the kids out. When you can afford it, start acquiring safes, and home security. The best advice you can get about safes is, buy 3 times the size you think you will need. Good luck! |

The mission for some us that actually do know, is fire and smoke protection, as well as theft. As someone who has actually been through a house fire, and witnessed the difference between the many guns in the fire safe, and the ones that did not survive in the Stack On cabinet, I can tell you that I am not fooling myself. You say it will never happen. I said the same damned thing. It will in fact take a bit longer for them to get in to my Liberty's, than the Stack Ons. Hopefully, the monitored security system has the cops there by then. Everybody's situation is different. |

I have a generic 8 gun locker I inherited from family that I'm fine with at the moment (no kids, security system, three LEOs living on the block). I'll probably get a legit safe in the next year or two since I've finally got enough value in firearms to justify keeping them REALLY secure from theft/fire/etc., but even then my locker will be used for other stuff. If the choices are $200 locker for some safety or waiting 2 years for a $2,000 fort knox.... grab the locker, and plan to get something else down the road. |

| Thanks for the input guys. A stack on seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Something to keep the kids out and a place to keep them. I'm being transferred to Hawaii in 6 months and will be most likely in a military community so hopefully won't have to worry about living in shady areas. I'll just save up while I'm there to pick up a nicer one when we move back. |

Get a locker and bolt that sucker down to keep them away from the kids. In my experience, kids get real stupid and forgetful when their friends start to come around .
When you can afford a real safe, then do it. Money well spent. I finally had a 'big' one (6'ft x 4'4"ft x 29"in) built last year and they do run into money real quick. But, a gun locker will allow you to stay in budget and give you a place to store ammo later when you do get a safe. But, DO get a gun locker and keep the kids safe when they get stupid. |
