Hi guys,

I just cut up the foam for a 1750 Pelican case holding an AR and a scoped 308, and I've got a question: How much compression is ok to use when closing the case (and is it possible to damage equipment using excessive force)?

While lying flat the "lid" of my case will come to rest, without pushing on it, about an inch from being mated with the bottom half of the case. To fully mate the two halves, it takes a bit of force. I understand that it is filled with foam but I'd hate to leave it closed and damage my scope or anything else in there.

Thanks in advance!

Did you cut out a spot for the gun? These are designed to take the smooth layer and cut it out to the shape of your gun. There are many good You Tube videos but basically:

Figure out how you want the gun to sit (heavier end towards the wheels)
Now flip the gun over (aka mirror)
Outline the shape with a sharpie
Lift that layer out
Cut it with an electric kitchen knife (don't use a razor knife, it will tear)
Put the foam back in the way you originally laid it out (the side you traced on will now be down and no marker lines visable)
Tweak where necessary

I have a Pelican Storm 3200, holds my Benelli M4 and Bushy AR. It's heavy and was to cumbersome for the range but to travel it's the best. These cases are top shelf.

Yes, I've already cut out the foam for the gun and everything else that is going in the case.

But since the middle layer (which is cut) is not as thick as the gun itself, the bottom and top layers of foam are required to compress when closing the case.

I'm wondering if I should trim either of these layers to reduce the amount of compression currently needed to lock up the case.

Any ideas?

Trim to fit

Compressing the foam might not hurt your rifle but will decrease the effectiveness of the foam.  You're pre-compressing what would give in an impact to the case.
