I need a qd sling mount for the rear of my receiver.  I have a magpul MS3 sling that has a qd swivel on one end and a regular clip on type attachment on the other end.  I have found 2 types that I like as options.  One, such as the Novenske
http://www.noveskerifleworks.com/cgi-bin/imcart/display.cgi?item_id=rec-qdep&cat=61
which requires the removal of the castle nut.

The other such as the Troy
http://store.troyind.com/Professional_Grade_Rifle_Receiver_Sling_Adapter_p/smou-pgr-00xt-00.htm
which goes on over the top of the castle and does not require the removal of the castle nut.

This option will probably prevent the stock from going all the way forward by about 1/8th of an inch.  I don't think that is a big deal.  This is my first AR which I bought and did not build so I have no experience with removing the castle nut.  I don't even have an armorers wrench yet.

What is your opinion of those 2 choices?

I forgot to mention Midwest Industries makes a couple that slip on over the castle nut also.

It depends what you're comfortable with.

I've tried the MI and Noveske.

I settled with the Noveske because it felt more stable to me. The MI one had a little bit of play and it was a lot heavier. I believe the Noveske one weighs the same amount as the standard end plate. I think the MI one is at least 2.5 ounces.

I like my DD one.  It's similar to the Noveske.

I have 3 of the Fortis.  No idea how much they weigh, but work great.

The only real reason to go with one of the retrofit "add on" receiver sling attachments is if you're subject to some sort of organizational prohibition from disassembling the stock.

Replacing the receiver endplate is generally far more secure, as well as lighter, and allow you to collapse the stock completely.  Though it's not common, there's always the possibility that a retrofit sling mount can loosen and/or shift which can cause problems not only with the sling being secure, but in the worst case scenario, could interfere with your ability to operate the charging handle.

If you're looking for a similar mounting point (side mounted rather than centerline), Troy also offers a replacement end plate version:

Can't beat the Noveske. I have one on all my rifles.

The Noveske works great and it is low pro.
