Using Magpul Moe mid length handguards. What are my side sling attachment options? Would rather have something rugged and basic, but am open to most anything.

Depending on what type of sling you're running, Magpul makes a sling mount specifically for MOE handguards: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XMAG504&name=Magpul+MSA+MOE+Sling+Attachment+Point&groupid=85

All I have now is the old usgi issue sling. Was thinking of a VTAC so I need an attachment on the front side to handle that type sling.

You could use this....

....and then be able to use the Magpul sling adapter.

It's an option, if someone else doesn't come along with a better idea.  I'm not very familiar with all the sling styles.

Like this, maybe?  IWC Micro, tough as nails.

That looks good, but I don't understand why everyone installs it at the back of the handguards. I would think the front would be better. Is it just a preference thing, or is it there because of some other factor like weight distribution?

It's a preference thing.  I and many others prefer to keep the sling behind the support hand - I tend to get tangled up easier when it's mounted forward.  I think it's easier to cross over to the other shoulder mounted there, too.

I tried both and much prefer the rear of handguard position.

Ok, I'm going to try this. What sling attachment are you using to connect to it? My experience with slings is from the military, so I know very little about modern stuff.

The IWC Micro has a bog-standard push to release QD socket - the same thing that is used on rails, buttstock QDs, etc.  This is what you mount on the sling:

(Is that what you meant?)

Where were you planning to attach the rear end of the sling?

Yes, that's what I meant. And I was planning on using one of the mounts that goes at the rear of the receiver, that replaces the receiver plate. Not sure that's the best option, but didn't want the sling on the stock, thinking it might get in the way.

That's what I was going to suggest.

I use one of the Boonie Packer kevlar sling mounts.  http://www.redi-mag.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=37  It would work well with both your GI sling and the VTAC.  They're only $10 and you easily switch it from rifle to rifle instead of having to buy sling mounts for every rifle you own.  I was looking for a good option to run two points on my duty rifle when I came across it.  It's a great option for those on a budget and also for those who can't modify their rifle.

I've had it for the last three years and it's still going strong.  Used it in Afghanistan and the only thing that happened is the sun has discolored it somewhat and one of the ends started to fray slightly.  No worries with barrel heat as I've used it on rifles that fired 1000 rds in a day.  I've had the barrel get hot enough that I had to lock the bolt back in order cool it and avoid a cook off, yet the sling suffered no ill effects.

Can't speak highly enough of Boonie Packer products.  Their slings are very well made and extremely low priced, by far the best value out there.  If you want two point, single point or three point they've got you covered.

I run my Boonie Packer 2P TQA sling to the rear mount on the stock and don't find that it gets in the way at all.  I do find that a lot of those receiver end plates for slings do get in my way when cocking the rifle however.

Good timing, Leg - I just ordered one of those adapters and a spare M4 buttstock adapter from Boonie Packer last week.  I just finished a new simple midlength build and wanted something that allowed me to completely remove the sling.  Their M4 buttstock adapter does that, but this is the first time I'm trying their SFSM.  I'm glad to hear that it has worked well for you.

If I like it, I'll probably permanently attach it to the 2P-TQA by stitching instead of the buckle like I do with QD loops.
