What is the purpose of the front and back option for installation of the swivel?  Is there a proper setting and if so, why?

Are you talking about this one?

If you are - this one is designed so that it can be mounted to both M16A1s with .625 FSB journals, and .750 M16A2 FSB journals.  One side is smaller to fit the narrower barrel.

New production side sling swivels no longer have the reversible crossbar as "officially" there are no more .625 barreled rifles in the inventory... nevermind that many GUU-5/Ps and USAF AR15s and M16s still have them - not to mention the RO933s which still circulate in the SOF community here and there.

Yes, that's the one, but I'm referring to the swivel part.  It is not centered.  I've seen most of them set up with the swivel closest to the butt end of the gun, others set up with the swivel closest to the muzzle end of the gun.

If closest to the butt, it allows the sling to lie flat along the forestock, but then makes the swivel stand proud of the attachment the other way as in when the gun is slung.

Any reason why?

Also, this thing looks cheezy, and I have milspec ones.  Do they ever pop off?

I've heard some slide back and forth but I think one layer of tar tape should cure that.

Loop back is how they come from the factory.

Loop forward allows for taking rail panels on and off.

Loop on other side for lefties and M203 mounting on the M4.

OK, thanks for the explanation.

...man the thing looks like it just wants to pull off the barrel...

I've seen a lot of things fail on M4 Carbines.  I don't know that I've ever seen a properly installed side sling swivel fail.

My unscientific intuition would be that the rivet holding the actual loop would fail before two roll pins supported by the pinned FSB would fail.

Your point about the swivel rivet is the reason I think I'll reverse the setup, as the way I am carrying the rifle {double slings "biathlon"-style, center back would have the swivel levering against the base otherwise, which may be no big deal, but I think the thing is more or less designed to be used with a carry method with muzzle down, maybe?

I hate those things.

I put one on, then removed it.  Slopped around and no thanks.  I sent it back.

I'll stick to my leather or nylon "belt" with D ring for center back "Biathlon" carry.
