I am going to start ordering parts for my first AR build tomorrow.  I will be getting many Magpul items because I like how they look, they are affordable, readily available, and for the casual weekend warrior/SHTF preparer they should function just fine.  I also have their Art of the Dynamic Handgun DVD set and really like it, and plan to get the Art of the Tactical Carbine soon.  I am a shameless Magpul fanboy in the making I guess.

What I'm wondering though, what is with all the hype about Magpul?  Is it the affordability?  Quality?  Aesthetics?  Or is it just the brand-du-jour for suburban commandos like me?

Are some of their accessories crap and some outstanding?

Help a newbie out!  Thanks!

Looks like everyone is sick of talking about Magpul!

I have very limited experience with magpul (Just finished mt rifle last week). But, for me, it is all of the above. I own the STR and I like the aesthetics of a lot of the other magpul stocks. I also have the MOE mid-length hand guard. I agree that a railed hand guard offers more versatility than an MOE, but for my needs it is perfect and comes at a lower cost. I think another thing to keep in mind is you can keep your rifle light weight while making it suit your personality better.

I for one, liked the idea of building  an AR, using parts from two different manufacturers (Spike's and Magpul). But that might be just me.

I think you have the wrong idea about Magpul. They are not designing for recreational/shtf type applications. They design their products for real world use by military and law enforcement. They make very good products and all of their stuff is made right here in the US. Their pmags are considered the best magazines you can buy, especially for the price. I personally use their products on my AR as well as any other gun I can put them on.

I like the majority of Magpul's products and had been a very satisfied customer since 2005, my first Magpul are the MIAD grip, enhanced trigger guard, rail ladder covers and anti-tilt followers for USGI 30rd mags.

Here are the Magpul products on my carbine in the picture:

XTM rail covers
AFG1 rail grip
BAD lever
MIAD grip
CTR mil-spec size stock with enhanced rubber buttpad
PMAG rev M with windows 30 rd mag

Other Magpul components on my other AR:

MOE mil-spec size stock
MOE grip
MOE trigger guard
MIAD grip battery storage core
MBUS rear folding sight
PMAG 30 rd without windows
PMAG 20 rd mags

There are only a few Magpul products I don't like and it's mainly a personal preference, like MOE handguards and ACS stock, they work great as designed from members experiences, but not for me mainly just because of their styling.

They have excellent customer service, when I have some components that needs to be exchanged or replaced, they are great to deal with and have prompt service.

I would say I have been pleased with most of the Magpul products I have owned. Their magazines are fantastic and I am a big big fan of their anti-tilt follower for the GI magazine. I also like their MIAD grip, the RVG, XTM rail covers, the ACS stock and the MS3 sling.

Magpul products I have disliked are the MOE handguards, the ASAP plate, and the BAD lever. I felt these products were a waste and in the case of the BAD lever actually hurt the reliability of my rifle.

Their customer support is second to none.

Im a fan of Magpul as well , but like with anything , "everyone envys/hates the popular kid" and thats what they are now . They do make high quality , high functionality products but with everyone using them you get alot of assembly line looking guns instead of the "one of a kind" look some guys go for . Nothing wrong with that as long as it functions well for you when it is needed . Don't worry about whats popular and whats not and just build the gun you like and you want and you'll enjoy it that much more .

Could you go into more detail.  Ive considered getting the ASAP plate for single point use.

That's what I was hoping to hear!  I'm placing orders today and will be building a black & tan Spikes/BCM middy with Magpul furniture.  Maybe not the most original AR out there, but I'll sure be proud of it.

In my opinion the ASAP is not a very refined design. I had a lot of binding issues when making the transition from one shoulder to the other. This got a lot worse with the MS3 sling which has a wider clip that tends to bind up in the linkage (for lack of a better word) on the ASAP plate.

I would recommend this product as a much more straightforward and refined solution. SLAP

Magpul makes some very solid products that will withstand as much abuse as you can throw at them.  Much of how someone configures their rifle is going to come down to personal preference, but at least you know  you're looking at quality products.

After much use, I've found the Magpul MS3, stocks, grips, MOE hg's,  vfg's and followers are all keepers.  The rail covers, rail sections, trigger guard and MBUS are OK, but there are plenty of competing products that do the same thing.

The ASAP, MS2, BAD and AFG have either been sold off or tossed into the used parts box of no return.  The ASAP link was just too much of an annoyance and I ended up making my own mount.  I really liked the flexibility of the MS2's 1/2 pt design for carbine classes and range drills, but the hardware and webbing left a lot to be desired (which the new MS3 corrects in spades).  I installed the BAD on a few rifles and wanted it to work for me as a lefty rifle shooter.  However, after 1000's of rounds downrange, I found it induced some malfunctions periodically and that made it a no-go.  Lastly, the AFG just didn't work for me after taking a carbine class.  I found it didnt' give a solid reference point when doing shoulder transitions and my support arm didn't enjoy being held straight out for a full day.  YMMV.

I own several Magpul products. They all serve there purpose well. Great quality too. There is a reason magpul is so popular int the AR world.

Magpul furniture is good to go...in my own experience, they make highly functional, durable, reliable and cost-effective furniture. My guns are "Magpul'd" throughout - both my lightweight rifle and my DMR. MIAD grips; CTR and ACS stocks, respectively; and VFG and AFG forward grips, respectively. Aside from furniture, though, I don't much dig their "enhancement" products, such as the BAD lever, slings, etc. The exception being the RSA rail sling mount - that's a useful piece of kit.

I have a friend who's son is a Marine in Afganistan. My friend sends Magpul magazines to his son if that tells you anything.

Some of their stuff is great, some not so great.  Keepers in my opinion from my personal use:

MIAD grip
CTR stock
STR stock
MOE forend - if not needing rails, if you need rails, there are much better choices.
MOE vertical grip - not the best, but not the worst either.

Speaking of Magpul, what's with the shortage of so much of their stuff lately?

I'm wanting to start on a new build with FDE furniture, only to find that no one has any, aside from a few holdout online stores (that I don't know or trust) that are selling them at MSRP (or very close to it).

The only real things I'm looking for from Magpul are the PRS stock and the MIAD grip, but they're unavailable on both the Magpul site or any of my regular suppliers.  The Magpul site isn't even selling magazines online any more!

What gives?

I have noticed this also. I looked at a few web dealers that I order from often for FDE PMags and a black AFG2 and a rail and all are sold out with NO ETA on shippments coming in.

Thanks for all the kudos guys!    Our goal is to build products that provide a good value (lots of features, performance, quality, and innovation for the price) and back them up with top-notch customer service.  Some of our philosophies can be found here: The Magpul Foundations

Regarding availability, chalk that up to the upcoming Election and The End Of The World.  The whole industry is being inundated this year and demand is exceeding supply.  Rest assured, we are continuing to ramp up production while maintaining our high quality standards and at the same time develop new products.  You'd be amazed with how many items we ship out the door daily...

Justin, I will wait for the next shippments. I love the MagPul drug that is pumping through my M&P15's veins.

As long as I get my next fix before the "end of the world" AKA elections....
