Shooting a Smith & Wesson MP-15. Installed the bolt catch correctly. When firing, the bolt is randomly locking to the rear, maybe every 3-5th round. When I removed the bolt catch, the weapon cycles correctly. Any ideas?

The weight of the BAD is overcoming the spring tension of the bolt catch. Sometimes that added mass effects the way the bolt catch pivots.
1-Try a heavier spring behind the bolt catch. It may become too much for the magazine spring to push against in an effort to lock the bolt open after the last round fired. So then you lose the ability of the weapon to lock open on an empty magazine. 2-Dump the BAD and use it on another rifle that is not as sensitive to messing with the bolt catch. Are you sure you have a good quality bolt catch and spring? Maybe that could help. HTH |
| One thing I noticed is that the back of my bolt catch was slightly curved near the bottom. Ill take a pic later to be clear but basically if you put the back plate of the BAD lever on the back of the catch it wont sit flush, and the reason can be seen at the BOTTOM of the bag plate. You'll notice if you slightly move the back plate up it sits flat, but as you slide it down in position it goes on a curve. What I did was take a dremel and turn it into a 90 degree angle which fixed this issue. |

I have never experienced this myself and I have had thousands of rounds downrange, very fast and slow fire, out of my m&p 15 so this is just me thinking out loud.
If you lift your finger off the trigger face when you are shooting you could be hitting the BAD lever when you reset the trigger causing it to lock the bolt back. Try shooting and holding the trigger back between shots a see if the malfunction continues. This possibility came to me from watching people at classes, new shooters I have taught the basics to and random people at my local range. I have seen people slap the trigger and when they reset the trigger their finger comes off the trigger and hits the front of the trigger guard. |
