I'm looking at a bayonet for my AR.
Yeah yeah, you can tell me I won't need one but in this commie state, I can only hold 10 rounds and I have to use a tool to remove the magazine. So, I'd like a knife at the end just in case. I've looked at the M-7: Cheap, will do it's job. M-9 Much more aggressive looking, wire cutter. However, I"m not sure about the manufacture, I thought Ontario knives were rugged and great but many have complained they are not the cat's meow and at $100+ I would expect it to be that way. Are the Ontario M-7s the same way? They're 1/2 the price. I have a mid length gas system on a 16" barrel and have a bayonet lug but I have a surefire MB556k muzzle brake. Will the ring on the bayonet fit? I'm not looking for a titanium tank on the end of my AR but I also don't want to waste my money on something that might fail me. And no, I"m not going to weld my Ka-bar onto an old M-7. Would even a old surplus m7 work? Just clean it up? |

I'd recommend the USMC bayonet, Ontario OKC-3S. i used one pretty hard while i was in service, it is much better than the M7 it replaced. Well weighted, good sheath, comfortable handle, durable. Slightly longer, thicker, and heavier than the M9, the USMC bayonet makes a decent fighting knife/bayonet combo if you can only carry one tool to do both. I recently picked up a 2nd USMC bayo from Midway USA on sale for $109, but IIRC that sale ended 11/31. There were all sorts of places selling it for $119, many with free shipping. Here's a link to the midway page:
USMC Bayonet at Midway USA ETA: like most bayonets the ring on the OKC-3S has a pretty loose fit over the flash hider, according to my tape measure the ID of the ring on my OKC-3S is almost exactly 7/8" |

My only gripe is the handle is brown, not black. |

Thanks for your imput. My only gripe is the handle is brown, not black. hmm, true. but since i was in the USMC i'm used to seeing coyote brown all around. i personally like the brown handle, but it's nice that the M9 is available with a variety of handle colors. i think the m9 is made of 420 stainless, i haven't handled one much but i don't hear many good things about the m9 from people who do - i guess early ones had a bad heat treat, and tended to break. even with a good heat treat, 420 is generally considered a poor edge holder, especially vulnerable to losing an edge to abrasion and impact. the high-carbon 1095 used in the okc3s hasn't disappointed me, 1095 seems to be a classic "fighting knife" steel. guys in my unit pretty much abused them and i've never heard of one breaking. it's tougher than stainless, holds an edge well and can be sharpened. it's not stainless tho, and can rust easily if neglected (ive never had a problem with rust, but my bayo gets a thin coat of clp from a leftover cleaning patch or something before going back into the sheath). i didn't mind the m7 when that was my issue bayonet, but as i mentioned earlier, i considered the usmc bayonet a big improvement when it replaced the m7. m7's can be found pretty cheap, if price were a factor i'd definitely get one before i plunked down over $100 for an m9. i've bought TWO of the USMC bayonets for over $100 each, so you know where i stand there... |

I would only use the bayonet for a bayonet. I have a general purpose kabar. Thanks for the info! |

Can someone tell me or show me (pics would be awesome) will or how a M9 Bayonet fits on a 16" M4gery? I have to believe the FSB is a different distance from the end of the flash hider on a 14" M4 barrel than a 16" M4gery, correct?
If this is the case, does anyone make a Bayonet for 16" M4's? S/F |

S/F If I remember correctly, they won't fit carbine length gas systems on a 16" barrel, or the bayonet ring will move to the barrel behind the flash hider. Maybe somebody can confirm. |

S/F For a 16" barrel with carbine gas system / front sight, you'll have to either get a bayonet with an extended handle or get another bayonet lug that clamps onto the barrel. |
