Has anyone ever attempted to directly install the flush cup into the hand rail. Therefore, not having to buy and attach the mount onto the rail. And keeping open rail realstate as well as maintaining the ladder covers
I just thought about drilling and tapping the rail for the screw-in Grove tec cup.

Just thinking out loud.
Will it work?

Might work, but you're going to lose as much rail space doing that as using a clamp on.

I was thinking of drilling and tapping directly into the rail. Only if a sling swivel (or other) was attached would I lose rail space.
. The cup would be there for future use and remain flush allowing it to be covered with any other rail mount (if needed).
But I do see your point. Once its covered, it cant be used.
Cheap alternative to  machined rail attachments .

I've drilled out an viking tactics handguard and used JB weld to epoxy in a couple of grove tec flush cups in different places.  Actually I've done this three times (one game loose due to a poor JB weld mixture on my part)

If you use strong enough high temp epoxy and enough of it, this works even without threading.  Its not exactly a 'mil spec' strength solution, but it works for me.  My current cups are proving to be pretty robust.

Edit:  Actually Grov Tec also sells a flush-cup to standard swivel adapter, which is pretty nifty as a forward bipod mount for light duty use.   I store the adapter in an unused flsuh cup  on my buttstock when I'm not actively using it as a bipod mount.

On those flush cups....please give me an opinion guys.  I am looking to build a bull barrel upper.  I want to use a YHM free float tube on it.  Do you guys think that one could drill a hole in the tube, and mount one of those on there?  Thanks guys, 9080
