| Sorry for the stupid question, but I have to ask it. Can someone explain to me the different types of mounts for slings? |
|
For an AR I assume? There are swivels, usually fixed to the front sight base under or on the side. There are QD swivels, which are push button swivels that lock into sockets on rails, rail attachments, end plates, and stocks and are easily removed by pressing their button and removing. There are burnsed loops, fixed strong loops for straps that can be rail mounted. There are small loops which are circular for HK hooks and MASH hooks. For every type of mount there is an endplate made for it like the SLAP and the ASP, replacing the end plate for a AR with a carbine stock. I don't know how to tell you.......there's too much stuff out there. You're better off specifying a weapon....then a purpose/sling...then find the mounts for it. |

Quoted: Thank you for the reply. You covered the three main ones that I had heard of, swivels, QD and HK. Which is your preferred or "the best?" Well I mean...you gotta start with a sling first. Because that's going to dictate everything, and everyone has their preferred attachments for different reasons. I use a SLAP plate from ikickhippies.com. Using a single point sling, I use a MASH hook to attach to it, because I find it easier to remove than an HK hook and I think it makes a solid and flexible mount to the SLAP. When using a two point I use the same on the SLAP, and I use a burnsed type loop on my rail for the sling material. I never used three point. Like I said....that's just my stuff and that's how I like it. My brother runs single point with a Noveske QD swivel end plate. Some people mount to their stocks using QD, and there are people out there making cheap QD swivels to avoid. I would pull up the picture thread of slings attached to weapons and window shop for what you want. Some people don't even use those attachments, they have slings that strap into the weapon itself on handguard and stock. |

What is your current AR setup, as that will determine what is best for you. If you have a CTR buttstock, that has a QD slot, then QD makes a lot of sense. Same with setups that QD slots on quad rails. If you don't have any spots for a QD swivel, then you have to choose a different sling type. (unless you are willing to change weapon components, or add something like the Mount-in-slot. 1st Determine what kind of a sling you want. (1,2 or 3 point). How do you want to attach that, to the butt stock, to the front of the hand guard, rear of hand guard, etc. Then how do you want to mount it to those points. I'm looking at different options for a sling right now, and I have a Mosin Nagant Sling on my AR. Its something I have laying around, and I can try different configurations and see how I want it. Through trying different configurations, I can determine what works best for me, so when I do buy a sling, I know where to mount it, and what kind of mounts I need to accomplish that. |
| Right now I have a bare bones M&P15X but I want to put the new Troy battle ax buttstock on it. I think that comes with QD swivels in it, but would you recommend running the sling off the buttstock or off the buffer tube, with an ASAP or similar device? Same question goes for position of the front sling mount on the handguard. |

Same question goes for position of the front sling mount on the handguard. That's a user preference thing. I use a SLAP because I don't like choking myself when I shoot left handed. |

Just looked at the SLAP, like that more than any other plate I've seen so far. I think I will start off with that but we'll see.
For a sling I have heard great things bout the Savvy Sniper QUAD sling. I would like to handle multiple slings before I end up buying one, so I guess I'll start frequenting gun shows. |
