Guys,

I am going to be taking a Carbine Course in August.

What is the best rig / pouch system for carrying CALIFORNIA 10 round AR magazines?  Any thoughts?

I split time in Nevada, so I am also interested in your thoughts on how to carry regular 30 round AR magazines as well.

Thanks in advance.

The Eagle/SKD Universal rig is very popular (it's what I have).  It's also a good, inexpensive rig to get for your first;  you can see how it works and decide what you may (or may not) need to drop more coin on.

I used to run an Eagle RRV. It's covered in MOLLE so it's pretty nice if you have to change setup

My suggestion would to buy a converted 30 round magazine to 10 rounds here so you can practice drills properly.  Then get yourself a kydex belt pouch here and use it as your primary reloading point.  After that get whatever chest rig etc. you want/need for your shooting style.

What I've done is taken the standard 30 rnd mag pouch of choice (I like the Molles) and modify it by placing a foam insert into the bottom.  You can get the foam at any craft store, (the firm, closed cell stuff is the best).  Cut it into rectangle shapes to fit firmly into the bottom of the pouch and you're good to go.  The foam adds zero weight, won't fall out, won't absorb moisture (this is why the closed cell is the best) and can be removed at any time.

I've modified my 30 rnd pouches this way because I prefer 20 rnd mags over the 30s.  I have also fitted my 20s with Magpul Ranger Floor plates which makes them an odd height and so they need the foam spacers in the pouches.

A pair of The Wilderness belt mounted magazine pouches will work fine for most carbine courses and work with all magazines from 10 to 30 rounds.

I attended my first non- work related class and tried to use a rather bulky South African vest.  It would have been great for a 5 day patrol, but no good for a class.  A kind soul let me use his spare setup- an Eagle M4LE chest rig.  It has 3 open top pouches with kydex inserts that retain the mag well and a bunch of MOLLE attachments.  I ended up buying it and selling the SA vest to a collector.

The Eagle rig is high quality and reasonably priced.

For every carbine course that I've ever taken, I've just put the spare mags in the back and front pockets of my jeans.
