I have an M4 carbine clone that I have added a front side sling adapter to.  I currently have it where the sling swivel folds to the rear.  This is the way it is pictured on the Retro Forum carbine sticky.  With it installed this way I can't remove my knights panels from the left side of the rifle without removing the entire handguard.  Is the swivel supposed to fold to the rear or to the front or does it make any difference?  It makes sense to fold it to the front since I could then get the cover off normally.  Thank you for your help.

The way you have it installed (folding to the rear/cannot remove the panel) is the way I've seen every factory installed swivel installed.

While I don't know that it would necessarily fail, being installed the other way would put more stress on the rivet when the rifle was slung.

For the left side panel, you're more or less stuck removing the handguards if you want to change the rail panel, unless you want to brute force it past the delta ring, which is possible, but it will eventually make the panel looser on the rail.
