I was reading about the pros and cons of the FVG as I have recently decided to remove mine and just use the magwell and mag with shoulders and elbows tucked in.
But one of the posters mentioned something happening when a shooter grips the mag and magwell like this...

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I have read that putting pressure on the magazine can cause feeding issues.

I've seen pictures of a few kB!s that have done a number on the magwell –– I would hate to think of what the support hand would have looked like if it had been resting there.

Even if you're going to bring it all the way in, I would use a VFG.

So LS-HD I've never even taken a carbine class –– take my advice with a grain of salt lick.

Most of those who don't advocate using a magwell hold cite a K-BOOM and what might happen to your hand.  As for the pressure on a magazine that you speak of, I believe that is only a possible problem if you are using the mag as a monopod.  I say a "possible" problem because I have shot quite a bit using the mag as a monopod and have never had any issues but I guess there is always a first time.

Looks like the "K-booms" happen because of bad reloads and only the upper is affected.
Well I just wanted to get a few members thoughts...

I use the magwell hold all the time on my rifle at work.  I'm more worried about my eyes than my hand if the rifle kabooms.  David

I don't hold the magwell for two reasons.  The most important is that two of my rifles missfeed when I put downward pressure on the mag which will happen when you pull or put slight pressure on it.  The second reason is that it is not very comfortable for me as my support hand is too crampt.  Moving my hand out three or four inches to where I have my vert grips installed is much more comfortable.

I avoid the magwell grip because I'm afraid of KBs.

I've never personally seen a feeding problem caused by a magwell grip.

You have more control of the rifle with a FVG than with a magwell when transitioning between targets. Unless of course you are talking about a SMG with a really short barrel a magwell grip is fine. If all you are doing is punching paper though probably no problem with a magwell grip.

It's my understanding that a lot people are training to shoot with their support hand far out towards the muzzle of the gun, citing better control of the muzzle for faster manueverability and faster and more accurate follow-up shot placement.  I've always shot this way because it felt more natural to me then gripping closer to the receiver.

That being said, you could do so with or without a vfg.

This is your answer... and don't let the "Kaboom" crowd scare ya.. that's a load of BS.. You have a better chance at shooting a bald eagle on the white house lawn and getting away with it then having your hand "Blow up" by using the magwell and the off chance of a Kaboom...

I run a VFG for better control and to operate a white light with..
The mag well hold is a carry over to the MP5 days with little short light weight barrels.
You get better control, especially when shifting from one target to another by having your hand further out on the handguard.
