I've got an 06 Wrangler and was hoping to get some input (experienced or not) on different method of securing my AR inside my vehicle but still maintaining deployability.
I've looked around merchants but no one has a cost effective solution. So.... I have removed my back seat and looked at using existing commericial cabinets or lock boxes and utilizing my seat mounting hardware. Whaduhyathink?

I'm gonna give this a loose tag to see where it goes...

I kinda want to mount mine vertically against the dash for desert excursions...

Actrually try someone like galls (www.galls.com) or gt distribution.  You can get a lockable patrol car mount for 200 to 250 easy.  That is the entire kit with momentary switch and all.  The only draw back is you are limited to the accessories you can have on the rifle due to it fitting in the latch.

What do you need it for?  Transporting it to and from the range?  There are all kinds of gun racks for AR15's ranging from $80.00 to high dollar "Big Sky Rack" security locking systems.

There are also pull out drawer weapon safes that could be mounted on your Jeep floor board.

I wouldnt trust a lock box "tool box" style cabinet to secure a weapon in a vehicle if left unattended.

I guess to help you out better, what is your application?  To secure while driving or to have it secured while leaving it unattended.  There is a big difference IMO.

EDIT:

Tufloc (security)
Pro-Gard (security)
Big Sky Gun Racks (security)

Below are not specific racks but are magazine mounts.  With a little engineering just bolt this to whatever and push your rifle magwell on to it and now it holds your rifle in place.  Push your magazine button and off the rifle comes.  Its not security but will keep it from being loose in the vehicle.  Drill a hole in the magazine mount bracket and push a cable lock through for a little bit of security.
You also just pick up a butt plate bracket (mount it on the floorboard) and this will make it even more stable.

Well, I can chime in with my intended application:

Just looking for a convenient hold-down while out in the countryside/desert/forest/whatever...

Kind of for "targets of opportunity" (legal of course!) but better than thrown on the back seat or floorboards.
Ceiling mount is out, so I'm hoping for a vertical dash set-up on the passenger side.

Roger Dodger.

I am wanting to use it for a more permanent like car gun.
I have mushed some heads together and have come up with a modestly robust case/locking mechnism.
Give me a couple of weeks to get the steel/harware together and I'll post some pics.
Still open to suggestions or experience..

Ghostring, they make a vertical double gun rack for ATV/Utility carts that most dealer sell for about 40 bucks.  That sounds like what your looking for.
