Just picked up the $30 Amplified Ear Muffs from Big 5 and they SUCK! I am going to take em back tommorow (one ear doesnt work). However, now that I have a taste for it, I think a nicer set would be a cool thing to have. I was wondering if you could guys to give some recommendations to some good ear protection that is amplified. Preferably under $100 Thanks J |
| I use these www.bigrivertactical.com/catalog/item/4457578/4461735.htm. Fairly cheap and so far I've had zero problems with them. |
| I've had spotted luck with electrified ears. My first try was a set of Radians Tac Ears and they were garbage pretty much. One didn't work at all and they seemed to be of fairly low quality. I then bought a set of Peltor 6S Tacticals...left didn't work on those. Midway USA swapped them out for and I've been using and liking them ever since. Every once in awhile I feel the need to add some plugs while using them but not too often...depends on what the guy next to me is doing. The electronics in the 6S are decent. I'm always afraid that they are going to send an amplified boom through my ear but they're quick enough to stop everything from a handclap to 50 cal Barrett. Keep in mind that most of the electronic reducers don't lower by as many dBs. |
I just picked up a set of Caldwell's at the local dealer for $30. I'm gonna try them tomorrow. |

I just got the Peltor Sport Tacs, they are much nicer than the Caldwells. My caldwells are not too comfortable and I think they dont respond quickly enough to the gun blasts. The Peltors are $99 but they are much more comfortable and the sound is much better and you can tell what direction the sound is coming from better. |

Same here. Peltor 6S Tacticals Like them a lot. I also wear them when hunting, my braked .308 is thunderously loud and I don't want to take even one shot without protection. Best part is cranking the gain all the way up and it's like having bionic ears -- better than human! |
| +1 on the Peltors. Later on you can treat yourself to some of these |
+1 Tack |
+1 on the TacSports. I got a set for my birthday and they are the cats ass. |
Do they actually fit the non aviation headsets ?? |
That's a dern good deal. Snatch 'em up! |

With the Peltors turned all the way up, can you pick up conversations in other rooms? Can you hear alot better than you could naturally? I need one for the range, but I would also like something that is kinda "007 status" where you can hear like a robot. Can the Peltors do that? -J |
Are you sure you found the Peltor Tactical Sport's for low $60's? Best I could find were 90's. I found the Peltor Tactical 6S's for $59, is that what you meant? |
LOL, I dunno if you can get 007 with 'em but the sound is definitely enhanced for me when I have them on. My left ear is whiskey delta & getting worse & when I have these on I can hear a lot better even after a day of training. |

IIRC you can get 18dB of gain over ambient. Had a squirrel jump out of a tree and land behind me, and it sounded like moose crashing through the woods! Even with the sound cranked up, it still clamps at 80dB. The only side effect of having the gain boosted, is even smalll percusive sounds will trigger the cut-out. |
Do you know how old your's are? The feedback on Midway has steadily degraded over the years on this set. I'm wondering if the manufacturing quality is falling off here lately. |
Even running them a slight bit louder than ambient can get fatiguing, particularly if you are in an area that has a slight breeze blowing. 6-8 hours of a low grade groaning sound in your ears will wear you down much more than you realize it can. I set mine so that they are as close to ambient levels as possible. |

I have a set of Com-Tac IIs that I ordered before the Tac-Sports came out. The Com-Tacs are really good but if I were to do it again I think I would get the Tac-Sports with gel inserts. Something to keep in mind is that there the electronic muffs have a lower NR rating. After a particularly loud shoot I had tinnitus for several months and it still comes and goes. |
