What's the preferred option?  Does it change if I'm trying to keep my carbine light(er).

I'm thinking of just three (bottom, left side and right side - leaving the top uncovered).  How does that sound?

Personally I like rail panels.  I've heard from others that the ladder style protecters are nice and low-profile, but tend to hang up and peel off during heavy use, but I don't have any personal experience with them good or bad.   The nice thing is that nowadays there are so many variations of panels to choose from. I have both TD and KAC    TD is a better mouse trap IMHO, but if you are a traditionalist KAC.  all personal preference

weight is not much of issue either way, panel or ladder type protector

good luck!

I run both on my FF RAS.  I use a TD rail cover on the 6 Oclock rail for my hand.  Then I cover the rest of the 6 all of the 3, 9 and 12 rails with Magpul ladder covers.  The ladders realy stop the rails from getting banged around inside vehicals and what not.  Plus it adds more of a slim line feel, which I like.

As for peeling off, never happend to me.

In my experience (uh, oh, lookout), if you heat up the barrel a lot and you don't mind if the front is wider than a normal handguard, then get the rail covers.  If you don't heat up the barrel (slow fire) and want to keep a slim profile (provided you have a slim railed foreend), then you may want to get the ladder rail protectors.

My DMM4 upper from ADCO came with three ladder panels.  The DD forends hold those ladder panels VERY well and I don't foresee them curling or peeling off as long as they are left alone and not installed and removed a bunch of times.

I've got a TD at 3 and 9 (OD) and a magpul XT panel in OD at 6.  I left a ladder at 12.  I'd like to get an OD ladder panel but noone seems to want to trade in the EE...

The TDs are very tight and secure.  The texture on them is Excellent and will hopefully be the new texture that Magpul molds into their MIAD grips.
