Maybe I'm missing something, but if a sling has a connector, such as an H&K type snap hook, what is the desire to have a release buckle? Has anyone been in a circumstance that the need to leave your rifle was necessary? I can see the slings with a web connector through a slotted sling plate, but if you have a snap hook, is a plastic buckle needed. It just seems its another thing murphy can play with, its a weak point in the design, and, if dealing with uncooperative individual(s), is one more thing that a bad guy can possibly dick with.

I've seen a guy jump off of the back of a deuce and a half get his web sling caught on the seat.  He wasn't seriously hurt, but he could have been if his sling had caught him under the neck instead of under his arm.  If his sling had an ERB, it probably would have given out under his body weight.  If not, it would have at least been alot easier to release the buckle than cutting him out of his USGI web sling.

In other words, if you are caught in your sling it doesn't do any good to detach the sling from the weapon... you need it to detach from you.

As far as Murphy goes, I've got 1" side release buckles on the shoulder straps on my assault pack that have never hinted at giving out under the weight.  If my sling ever has more weight on it than my assault pack, I probably don't want to be in it.

Finally, if a bad guy has his hands on my rifle, then I don't want to be trapped in the sling with him wrestling with me... time to ditch the rifle and transition to the sidearm.  YMMV.
