The sling can be too long, but as you suggest, too short is worse. Counterintuitively, the longer slings are more appropriate for the AR15. I'm a 6 footer, not especially long armed and have the 54"... was a hair too long on my M1A.
An even better sling is made by Les Tam, in Hawaii. Makes the Turner look like a lightweight. You can find out more about his slings at http://www.sharkysdive.net/lestamslings.htm
Les doesn't do much with the computer, but his service is incredible. When you get a sling from him he will want to talk to you personally, and will customize the sling with you initials and a stamp of you favorite branch of the military, if you want. Mine has WWI vintage sling hardware... a really nice personal touch. The sling is solid as a rock.
I've had both and like the Tam sling better, but the Turner is very very good.
Les's contact information:
Don't forget - he's on Hawaii time... don't call him first thing in the morning from the continental US: might make him a touch cranky.
