| I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to scopes. Im looking for something good that can get to atleast 12x. What's the best scope I can get for around the $300-$500 range? Also, 1st vs 2nd focal plane? |

I use a Nikon M-223 w/ 600BDC reticle and have had very good luck with it and it holds it's "zero" well. I haven't been able to shoot it past 300yds. as of yet. I shoot a 18" s/s bull barreled 223 Wylde chambered AR. Good luck and you will find plenty of choices out there. Mine cost me $450.00 new but you can get refurbished scopes thru "Natches Shooters Supply" for around $340.00 |

The SWFA SS line of scopes seem to get really good reviews and the few that I've handled seemed pretty nice for their cost.
The 3-15x is currently on sale right now for $499. You can choose either Mil or MOA depending upon what you prefer. https://swfa.com/catalog/product/view/id/117116/ I've also heard good things about the Leupold Mark AR. The 3-12x version can be had for $450-$500. |

Unless you intend to dedicate your rifle to bench shooting or prairie dogs a 12x scope is too much.
A 3x9 is close to the max for field use. A 1x4 or 1.5x5 is best for self-defense. It will allow for both eyes open close range use like a red dot for in your home. 4x or 5x is plenty out to 500 yards. Very good Leupold scopes can be found on sale for around $500. You'll want a cantilevered scope base that raises the scope from 1.375" to 1.5" above the rail. |
