I know this may get asked a lot, but here I go, there are so many options and I need some people with real experience to help.
I am looking to spend 500 or less on an optic for my new spr rifle. The range I normally visit goes up to 400 yards max. However, I find that with my 3-9 scope I still have trouble seeing my target sometimes.

Can you guys recommend some options? I would like to be able to still engage at 50 yards if need be, but would like to push out further to 400+ depending on shooting possibilities.

Quality is important, customer service factors in as well. What magnification would be best for me? Do I just need to learn to deal with 3-9? I am fine with learning the scope and am open to 3-9 options. Or options that have starting magnifications lower but go higher than 9 for maximum.

Thanks much!

Tagging for info for my next build. I'm in the same boat as you.

I've looked at a vortex 2.5-10x44 but it's a little put of your budget (and mine)

I like the 2.5 - 10x, just wondering what other options your guys have. I am trying to get something with magnification that allows me to see clearer at distance but still be able to get up close, somewhat close if need be.

People seem to like the PA 4-14× as a budget scope.

I use a leupold 3-9. Not something to get used to, but rather what youre comfortable using.

Okay, I did more search and I bought this:

Vortex - I think it looks good

What do you guys think??

I bought from amazon because I can return with ease.

Sorry for not getting back sooner.

That looks like a good scope! The only thing I couldn't tell was if the reticle is illuminated? Not sure if you even wanted illuminated so not a big deal.

Let me know how you like it. I might get the same thing.

What mount are you going to use?

I've used that exact scope and loved it. Ended up selling the rifle with it on it and missed the scope more than the rifle itself. Looking to pick up another one.

For the use you're describing it's perfect. I had it on an SPR build and it fits the bill nicely.

No worries at all, I saw it and jumped on it. It is not illuminated from my understanding. I wasn't really looking for that. In my experience, as little as it is, never had luck with them. I know they are great, but for my purposes, I doesn't make sense.  I have two mounts I have a P.E.P.R mount and the super lightweight one from Aero. I think I will use the Aero on on it:) Excited for sure!

The discontinued Vortex 2.5-10x32 would be a good option around that price. I'm very happy with mine.  I think I paid $400ish from cabelas a couple of years ago.  They can still be found around that price second hand.  The PST version can be found around $500 now too.

Another option,  but more than you want to spend. I've found them around $650.

While I might have recommended something else the HS should work well.  I'm curious what the brand and model 3-9x scope you were not happy with.

Ability to see detail is not all about magnification.  Its the resolution ability of the scope.  That is dependent on the optical quality of the lens systems, which generally, but not always increases with price.

I have a high end 2-7x36 Austrian Kahles scope that can see much more detail at 100 yards and beyond than many scopes with twice the magnification.

Not suggesting you spend that much on a scope.  I'm merely curious that perhaps your problem with the 3-9x might be low resolving capability of the glass rather than magnification.

Hey Guys,
What is the deal I see with all these really marked down weaver scopes over at Natchez? For instance, This one: here

I looked at the grand slams and the super slams, and I have to say, from what little I know, I am impressed. Yes, they are hunting scopes, but for the range, perhaps some hunting at somepoint would they not be good? I am just curious? I have red dots for my serious CQC, and honestly while these weigh a bit they do look nice. I read for most of them the glass is made in Japan. At one point that meant something, at least my Uncles talks about how good "those old jap" scopes were. I dunno, I know vortex has the VIP and is American made, I am just looking at my wallet and trying to get the most for money. On my builds I have bought from vet owned and operated almost exclusively - or at least shops that support vets strongly.

@ms556 I think you are correct, actually spot on. I think I have been dealing with some cheap stuff and its got me sort of down. I hope to change that here soon, looking at other options.

Mounted it on a rifle just to see how it looked, man it is CLEAR and nice! I suggest them!

In that price range I'd go with either one of the more modest Vortex offerings (discussed at length above), or a SWFA SS. Their fixed 10X and 12X can be had in mil/mil, focus down to 50m, and have a stellar reputation, while being $300 or less. If that's not doing it for you they offer a 3-15 FFP mil/mil that can be found used for the $500 ballpark area, and crop up on the EE from time to time.

I use scopes that cost several times what my SWFAs cost, and still have quite a soft spot for them. I'm surprised they haven't been brought up yet really.

Nikon just put out a new "Black" series, 499-599, depending on if you get illumination. Two reticle choices, one milrad, one mildot. range is 4-16x, with a 44mm obj.  Haven't gotten my hands on one yet, but I'm wanting to try it out on my 20" gun (also looking at their 1-4x for my 16"). Nikon has good glass, and all the features are there.
