I've been looking for a good budget spotting scope. I realize good and cheap might be mutually exclusive, but I'm curious if anyone has used a budget scope like this one and if it's good enough? I'm thinking out to 300 yards for target shooting but most of the time will be 100-200. Any feedback is appreciated.

Other options?

Maybe wrong forum for this, but just a quick bump and title change to see if there are any good options.

I would highly recommend to spend an extra $50 (less if found on sale) and get a Konus 7120.  You can open a chat with Optics Planet and ask them to sell it for $165-$170.  They may bo it.  It is a great spotting scope for the money.

a buddy of mine picked up a cheap telescope instead.
he had to change out the tripod and mount, but it was better glass then he could have gotten for something labled spotting scope.

Thanks for the ideas and options. I'm getting the impression (also read a variety of reviews) that it will be hard to see a bullet hole at 300 yards with these cheap scopes and there is a pretty big price jump to the next level with most being $500 and up.

I bought an Orion StarMax 90mm TableTop Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope In 2013 and have been using it ever since.

It came with 50x and 125x Magnification eyepieces, and it is clear as a bell and I can see 22 caliber size holes  with ease when testing my reloads at 100 yards.

Pop in the 125x and you can see your hits  well out to 500 yards..

A year later I did purchase a Orion 1.25" 45-degree Correct Image Prism   because when you look through the eyepiece everything is ass backwards and left is right and right is left.  Even though I got used to it after a while it was a pain,, but it was still better than spending $500 and up for a spotting scope. The whole setup cost me  $230,, and the glass is crystal clear.

Much better quality than some of the other actual spotting scopes in this price range that I tried.

Anyway, that's what I have been using YMMV

Thanks for the info. I actually like that idea and having a telescope is cool too. My daughter has been bugging me for one off and on so maybe a win-win.

ETA: found this option as well. More for spotting but still a telescope. Not sure which way to go.

Konus is the best "cheap" spotting scope I've tried.  I still use one for range use out to 300 yards.  I've had it for years and it's beat up but still works great.

I believe that is basically the same thing that I have, but for a dollar more at the link I showed you you get the tabletop stand with it and I believe more magnification on the Orion.

The tabletop stand is pretty solid to and I actually liked it better than a tripod that I had first started to use it on. I usually put it on a table or a bench right next to me and it's a lot easier and quicker to adjust and find your target downrange than if it were on a tripod..

Either way if it were me I would go with the Orion just for the fact that for a dollar more you get the stand with it.  It will come with the little top reflex sight and the two different magnification eyepieces.

Like you said, it is also cool to have it to be able to use  as a telescope also. They claim that you should be above the sea craters on the moon and the rings of Saturn with it. Of course ever since I had it I keep telling myself that I'm going to take it outside one of these nights and do that but I haven't yet

I have an inexpensive Alpen spotting scope, which I've used deer and elk hunting for years. Awesome optical quality especially for the price. I've spent some time with it side-by-side with a nice Swarovski, and it compared well. Something to check out.

Midway has a Simmons one on sale now from $100 to $70. It also has a $10 rebate.  Reviews said it was good at 100yrds but not the best at 100+.

On the flip side, I put my spotter on a tall tripod for my wife and daughter to look at the moon.
It's actually pretty awesome when the moon is full.

But, a telescope may be easier to aim.

OP stated he need out to 300 so that won't be any good.

The cheaper the glass the less resolution you will have and image quality will go down the further out you get.

It will get tougher and tougher to see the bullet holes.

If you have a day with allot of mirage you will have a hard time seeing any holes even at 100 with cheap glass.

I saw that but I think it's too cheap (not price but glass). At this point I'm leaning more toward a telescope but need to go find a shop to check a few out. It's been a while since I looked at telescopes.
