I just bought one of these at a great price for my AR15 that had only open sights. My eyesight isn't great anymore and open sights are hard for me to use so I've been looking for a red dot. Since my bank account is empty too I needed it to be cheap. I got this for $170. I had been thinking about the low end aimpoint but it was more than I wanted to spend and I like the prism optic in general.
Anyway, haven't shot it yet, but looking at objects in the yard they are kind of blurry and there is a slight fisheye effect. If I mess with the focus ring it helps. I thought this was to focus the reticle (even the manual says so) but it seems to have an effect on the distant view as well. This optic is supposed to be parallax free but this kind of feels like a parallax issue. If I get it looking good at near objects it isn't idea at far objects. I've managed to find a spot where it is more or less okay and for the price I think it will work fine. I "feel" like I should be able to shoot a lot better with this over the open sights so that's what I really want. Anyway, I'm curious if others have experienced this or is it more an issue with my marginal eyesight? I see distance just fine with glasses but close up I can't focus anymore unless I use bifocals or remove my glasses (like for reading). Aging sucks! |

Then a red dot optic is what you should have bought. That is not what a Vortex Spitfire 1x is. The Vortex Spitfire 1x is a 1x prism scope. As such: It has eye relief requirements and will not be 100% optically "transparent." Quoted:

and there is a slight fisheye effect. If I recall the reviews I read, on-line, this is fairly typical. Some claimed it was not enough to cause a problem with both eyes open. Others thought otherwise. Quoted:

| Thanks. I know it's a prism scope not a red dot. I did look at red dots and overall they seem fine, but I liked the reticle on the spitfire and that it's etched and works with the power off. The only red dot I liked was twice as much and since everything was a compromise in one way or another I opted for this one. I guess I just thought that a 1x would be just that and no optical artifacts. Thanks for clarifying that it's the nature of the scope. |
| i have one and i love mine. it won't work like a red dot in that there is unlimited eye relief. just set it up so you see the whole image through it. it might need to be mounted father back than you are used to though .then just focus the thing till the recticle is sharp. i have bad astimatism and the dot is nice and sharp for me. |

Generally the most common issue with these comes when they are mounted too far from the eye. How far do you have it mounted forward on the rail? It's actually mounted pretty far to the rear. It is just in front of my flip up sight. For me, the problem is some slight optical distortion. I can minimize it and don't think it will be an issue, but until I spend some time shooting I won't really know for sure. |
