Kind of toying with the idea of putting a night vision monocular behind my red dot optic.  The optic is rated for night vision so that's not a problem.  My problem is the over whelming number of options, price ranges, and generations.  I don't want to break the bank but also don't want a piece of junk.  I don't mind if i have to have an external/separate IR light as I'm already looking at buying one capable of performing that role.  What's out there?  What is recommended?  Prefer the $500 range, is that realistic?

I would save your money for the real deal. My experience with all things made in China has been universally disappointing.

I personally wouldn't waste money on anything below Gen 2 (which is probably going to be well over $500).

Armasight Spark Core. It's actually not bad. You pretty much need an illuminator past 20 yards when it's real dark but unless you're taking on other guys who will see your illuminator who cares.

Obviously if I had more money I'd get a pvs 7 on EE but that's still double the price. For around the yard during SHTF this will do for now.

I would look for a chopped PVS-5 or a generation 2 monocular like a m845 Litton ... or something similar on the EE. Gen 2 would be the best bet in the 500-700 range. IMHO and good luck!

Gen 2 minimum. I would look for a used or blem PVS14 on the EE. But your entry point will be around 2K.

No matter how great your NV is alone, once you mount it behind the optics, it will be a little bit diminished due to glare, dust on glass, optics quality  etc. Then, once you actually go outside in the wild and use it, you will have mist, condensation on the glass, lighting effects from lights in the distance, shadows, etc. You will be asking a lot from a $500 NVG. It will turn you off from NV.

After using a good Gen 3 PVS14 mounted behind a XPS3 and also T1 and Comp M3, and wandering around at night, in deep woods, I am starting to consider thermal...

You're going to be disappointed with anything less than good gen 2. My first was a gen 2 D300. Then I upgraded to a new L3 gen 3 omni 8. The performance is phenomenally better when there's no light pollution. My buddy has a spark core. He's happy with it. No matter what you're going to need an illuminator. We were out shooting Thursday and he absolutely needs an illuminator to see anything. The on board illuminator is actually very bright. I only needed an illuminator to cut down the bloom of my laser.

Here's a quick video he took with the onboard illuminator and then a picture I took of my car with no illuminator. The third link is an old video I took with a flip cell phone and my gen 2 D300. Without an illuminator it struggled when there wasn't any light pollution and there was a ton of noise (sparkles.)

Edit. I uploaded videos of the Armasight Spark, D300 and L3 OMNI VIII to youtube. Even with the light pollution the gen 2 doesn't come close to the gen 3.
