I just recently purchased my first AR15 COLT LE6920. I have been looking at optics and can't seem to make any headway.

I have looked at trijicon optics mainly and just started researching AImpoint. The first thing  i was looking at was Trijicon 42mm Reflex scopes, but upon researching them a lot of people have found that they wash out. I also really like Trijicon's ACOG, however, the 1.2k price value is going to having me saving for quite awhile.
Any suggestions for a first time AR owner?

What's your budget and intended use?

My intended use is just recreational shooting. I am definitely willing to spend the money to get a Trijicon ACOG, but would need to save a bit. My max price would have to be around that cost, lets say $1.2k.

Just going to mention this, check out Vortex Optics. I got one of third 3X prism scopes and I am very happy with it.

I have an aimpoint pro on a colt 6940 carbine and it works pretty good for me out to 100 yds for hunting and 200 yds for banging my 8 inch gong . I also have a trijicon acog ta31f on a 20 inch rifle and it works very well for me the 4 power works well for a general purpose rifle . If you want to be a bit more precise at say 100-200 yds then why not look at a trijicon accupower 1x4 they are not much more than an aimpoint and about half the cost of an acog  I own 2 accupowers one is a 2.5 x10 and the other is a 4x16 they have good glass and are built well . so you need to decide just exactly how you intend to use the carbine and go from there . with all that said I would not feel under gunned with a good carbine and an aimpoint pro its about the best bang for the buck out there for a red dot .

You might want to look at the trijicon accupower 1-4 with BDC reticle. I personally reccomend low power variable scopes unless you're strictly doing CQB  home defense then you need a red dot, or you're using it for varmint hunting then you need some sort of other 3-9 4-16 etc etc. The acog's are great but have short eye relief so unless you shoot nose to chraging handle it could be a problem.

Then, I have three suggestions under $500

For a 1x red dot, Aimpoint Pro.  If you can go $600 get the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro mini reflex.

For a low power variable with illumination. the 1.5-4x20mm Leupold Mark AR with Firedot G SPR reticle.   It is MRAD with .1mil per click tactical turrets and MRAD based SPR reticle.  About $400-$450.  If you can go to $550-$600, step up to the 1.25-4x20mm Leupold VX-R Patrol with even better glass.

For a midpowered non-illuminated scope the Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x40mm MidwayUSA exclusive.  Very good Japanese glass and construction.  MRAD turrets and matching mil dot reticle.  Amazing value at only $299 when on sale regularly.  For illumination, the 3-9x40mm version of the VX-R Patrol at $550-$600.

The AR is not a long range rifle. Most people shooting one will either do so at an indoor range or outdoors at distances of 100 yards or less.

Start with a quality red dot. The Aimpoint Pro can be had for $360 on sale. It is a "go to war"  quality optic and will fetch close to what you paid for it on the used market.

Later,  if you want to start shooting for groups,  pick up a low powered variable. The Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x is a great example and can be found for around $650 if you know where to look. By the time you think you are ready for a LPV,  you'll probably be halfway finished with your 2nd "precision" AR build so the Aimpoint Pro can just stay on the Colt (which is perfect because the LE6920 is not designed or setup for shooting 1/2" groups at 100 yards).
