I'm looking to get a mid range (2.5-10, 3-9, etc.) that can take a beating, but not break the bank (I know, good luck). I have a Mk4 1.5-5, but looking for more magnification. I'd like to keep it either US or Japan made. What I've been looking at:

-SWFA SS HD 3-9

-Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32 (Made in Phillipines is my only concern)

-Keeping it in the MK4 family (3.5-10 or 2.5-8)

I'd like to hear some opinions/expierences with any of these optics.

Rifle that optic will be sitting on:

It's not keeping it in the family, but I have a Nikon M-223 that I have dropped hard onto concrete twice that has not been impaired in any way. One hit was hard enough to knock the free-float tube off its threads. It's made me a believer in Nikon's durability.

I had a customer deploy with a 2.5-10x32 on a scar, and i've used that optic on other builds with good reports. if you want a parallax adjustment (imo it's not necessary with a 10x scope, but some people like it) the 32 is cheaper though.

I've used the vortex 2.5-10x32 on a few builds, it's lighter, but it doesn't have a true zero stop unfortunately.

if you like Leupold, i've used the vx-r patrol on a few rifles, no complaints so far

do you think a 1-8 would be enoguh magnification?

Deployed with a nf or vortex 2.5-10? Id get a nf in a heartbeat, just out of my price range (7-800). A 1-8 would be nice, but I haven't seen one that interests me other than the Mk8. I'd love to hear that the vortex is a tank, because im liking sounds of it. I know they have great customer service. But I'd rather get a scope from a company that has bad customer service, and never have to worry about sending the scope in (if that makes sense).

Look around the web. The PST is not known for being robust.

I too have read of caps busting off and the loss of zero on some forums.
This is my "go to" rifle, so I want parts that can take a beating.

I have a pst 1-4 with uncapped turrets I've never had an issue with. It's fallen out of my side by side, been dropped, deer/corn/gear thrown on it, you name it and I've never had an issue with it. I'll be getting the 2.5-10x32 for my next long range build. I've heard Vortex has excellent customer service which I have yet to need. For the money the Viper pst has great glass also.

Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40mm with motion activated FireDot TMR reticle is rugged and has nice glass in your budget at about $600.  Accurate tracking MRAD turrets and matching TMR illuminated reticle. Much better low light performance with 40mm objective and still weighs only 15.3 ounces.

Agreed

2.5 x 10 44 pst here. The thing is awesome with features of $1000 scopes. And a ridiculous waranty.

I do a great deal of research before I purchase gear. This came highly recommended from a LD shooter I know that uses serious glass.

Your'e not looking hard enough then.

Canted reticles, turrets breaking off, specific models having serious clarity issues just to name a few.

I'm not saying they are a bad scope but for a "go to" rifle it is not the best choice. They are a "budget precision" scope and they are built that way. Don't confuse them with higher end optics because they are not the same.

Got to play around with a 2.5-10 pst. Glass seemed very clear and turrets were very crisp. Im just having a hard time pulling the trigger.

Really been eyeing the SWFA SS 3-15. I've read Japanese made, clear glass, and built like a tank. No illumination, but I can live without that. Anyone have any experience with it?

How do you like it? Have any problems at all? Glass clear?

No problems, glass is great for the money. It has a ton of adjustment range which is good. It's very compact for its power range so it pairs well with an AR.

Only problem is the shape of the eyepiece does not work well with butler creek scope caps. It is very smooth so the cap will sometimes fall off after some use. Other than that its a great scope.

There is also a guy on snipershide who makes shims to make a zero stop for the turret. I have it and it works similar to the ZS on a PST.

I had the SWFA 3-9 a few years ago. Sat on an SPR I no longer own. Glass was fantastic (I replaced a Leupold Mk4 3.5-10 becasue I didn't like the mismatched turrets and lack of FFP, and to me the SWFA glass was better). Clicks were very positive (much better than the Mk4). Good features. Only thing I didn't like was that the eyebox got pretty sensitive at 3x. To me it was more useable at and above 4x. That was about three years ago and I don't know how good they are now. I would still buy another though.

For anyone that has a Leupold 3-9x40 VX-R patrol, how is the eyebox at various magnifications? Does anyone have the Leupold and a SWFA HD? I'm also looking to upgrade glass on a rifle and considering trying the VX-R Patrol or buying another SWFA, but the turrets and glass on the last Mk4 I had were disappointing enough that I'm afraid to. I just love the way the illumination works enough to tempt me.

Now I'm kinda between the SS HD 3-9 and the basic 3-15! Is the HD much better than the basic?

I have a 5-20 HD and I like the turret design of them better. Glass is better too.

In the mid-range power, mid-range price category for general purpose illuminated scopes, the Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40mm was my choice.  The motion-activated Firedot TMR MRAD reticle that can be made full noon day sunlight bright, combined with the accurate tracking, repeatable matching MRAD turrets performs well for me.  The 30mm main tube is very strong and durable even though the optic at about 15.3 ounces is just about the lightest 30mm tactical scope out there in its magnification range.  I've been running it for about 3-1/2 years now.  Still on the original battery. Optical quality is very good.  I'd estimate it as close to VX-3 on the Leupold scale, which is quite good given its price.
