Looking to spend $2-300 on a simple scope for a Winchester pre 64 model 70
Hunting and longish range (less than 1000yards) target shooting Any suggestions? Right now I'm considering the primary arms ACSS, nikon prostaff, and vortex diamondback Must have target elevation turret |

Get a hunting scope for that classic rifle. Capped turrets and duplex reticle. Leupold 3-9x40 VX-2.
If you really need "target elevation" on a pre-64 classic 30-06 Model 70, the best choice in your budget is the Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x40mm from Midway USA. Real Japanese glass and construction. MRAD turrets, .1 mil per click, that are accurate and track well. Matching mil dot reticle. I run one on a long range Sako bolt gun in 6mm Remington. It is a sporter or light varmint setup, but 1,000 yard capable. You should find the scope on sale frequently for about $300. Better than most scopes costing up to 50% more. It is orders of magnitude better than what you are looking at now. It is the greatest value going in a mid power tactical scope.

My thinking is that the pre-64 Model 70 is a classic, wood stocked hunting rifle. Sporter profile barrel. Not free floated. It is chambered in a classic calibre. It will probably shoot no better than 2 MOA, which is fine for hunting out to 300 yards or a bit more. The preferred capped scope with duplex reticle is sighted in 3" high at 100 yards. That permits point blank shooting by just putting the crosshairs on the desired point of impact and striking in the kill zone from the end of your barrel all the way to 300 yards. A 10" holdover, easy to do without messing with turrets or a special reticle, gets you to 400. Beyond 400 it will not be accurate enough for hunting or precision shooting. I have several rifles like that, including a Model 70 and several Remington 700. An incredible Remington 725 in .280. They work well in that role but are not long range precision rifles. I've taken more deer than I can possibly count with such rifles over more than 40 years of regular hunting. I'm 66 years old. I have long range and precision rifles. That model 70 is most likely a hunting rifle. It should perform wonderfuly for that purpose. If his rifle is a target variation with a better barrel and stock, a tactical type scope might be worth it, or if he wants to learn holdovers and hold offs with the MRAD system, and the Weaver GST is the best of the bunch at its price point. |

I like the weaver. Has what I'm after and nothing else. Can anyone comment on optical quality vs vortex viper series?
As for those recommending a classic scope. I have the classic scope and mount (can't recall make) that was associated with this gun and it is what has prompted me to upgrade. I have developed a need for better quality glass and an elevation turret |
